- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is oustanding! Although told from a "fictional perspective" the author having been a Marine Raider himself, makes ever sentence ring true! I have met many former Marines who fought in World War II including some of my uncle's. This reads like a very true story "with the the names changed to protect the real characters"! Very humorous in the macabre way that comes from becoming very familiar with meeting out and being a first hand witness of death.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2012Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseI picked up this book for my father, but took time to read it before passing it on... Wow, great story that sucks you in immediately. I can't imagine being involved in a war like our soldiers in WWII were. One of the individuals mentioned in the story was a good friend of my uncles, so the story hits pretty close to home. I highly recommend taking the time to read this book. As a veteran (in peacetime), I really appreciate what those who serve in a time of war go through!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is a great read. Couldn't put it down and when the story ended I wanted more. My Grandfather was a 4th Marine Raider and the story shed a lot of light on the battles, the tribulations and the comradeship that they went through in the Pacific and I appreciated learning more in such an entertaining way.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2013Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseBy the time I finished this book, it was apparent to me that Mr. McCormick wrote it as much for his old buddies, to honor and remember them, as he did for anyone in 1995. Though he does write about combat, the story is as much about his buddies and their antics as it is about the war itself. As a former enlisted USMC rifleman myself, I can speak to the book's authenticity in capturing the behavior of young Marines who have a lot of imagination and time on their hands. A great read.
Mr. McCormick passed away in May, 2012.
