NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“This book is a must for everyone interested in illuminating the idea of unexplainable genius.” ―QUESTLOVE

Equal parts biography, musicology, and cultural history,
Dilla Time chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century.

He wasn’t known to mainstream audiences, even though he worked with renowned acts like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu and influenced the music of superstars like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. He died at the age of thirty-two, and in his lifetime he never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod: revered by jazz musicians and rap icons from Robert Glasper to Kendrick Lamar; memorialized in symphonies and taught at universities. And at the core of this adulation is innovation: a new kind of musical time-feel that he created on a drum machine, but one that changed the way “traditional” musicians play.

In
Dilla Time, Dan Charnas chronicles the life of James DeWitt Yancey, from his gifted childhood in Detroit, to his rise as a Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer, to the rare blood disease that caused his premature death; and follows the people who kept him and his ideas alive. He also rewinds the histories of American rhythms: from the birth of soul in Dilla’s own “Motown,” to funk, techno, and disco. Here, music is a story of Black culture in America and of what happens when human and machine times are synthesized into something new. Dilla Time is a different kind of book about music, a visual experience with graphics that build those concepts step by step for fans and novices alike, teaching us to “see” and feel rhythm in a unique and enjoyable way.

Dilla’s beats, startling some people with their seeming “sloppiness,” were actually the work of a perfectionist almost spiritually devoted to his music. This is the story of the man and his machines, his family, friends, partners, and celebrity collaborators. Culled from more than 150 interviews about one of the most important and influential musical figures of the past hundred years,
Dilla Time is a book as delightfully detail-oriented and unique as J Dilla’s music itself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Stunning portrait of the short life and fast times of James Dewitt Yancey. . . sad, funny and unfailingly humane, it’s not only one of the best books this writer has ever read about hip-hop but also sets a new gold standard for writing about music full stop."― Ben Johnson, Mojo Magazine

"[
Dilla Time] do[es] what good music books should: send you back to the source material . . . Dilla Time is an important piece of music writing, affording its African-American subject the respect that the rock establishment has long accorded its white heroes." The Economist

“It’s no ordinary book. . . equal parts biography, musical analysis and cultural history delving deep not only into Dilla’s history and music but also into the histories of rhythm and his hometown of Detroit.”
Variety

“Educational without being overbearing, emotional without turning saccharine,
Dilla Time is a must-read not only for fans of Yancey, but anyone with a deep love for hip-hop or Black music, full stop.”The Ringer

Dilla Time is a portrait of a complex genius taken too young, as well as a glorious study of the music and culture he created.”Spin

“An ambitious, dynamic biography of J Dilla, who may be the most influential hip-hop artist known by the least number of people. . . A wide-ranging biography that fully captures the subject’s ingenuity, originality, and musical genius.”
Kirkus (starred review)

“The book’s heart is its rich, evocative musicological analysis, complete with rhythm diagrams, of Dilla’s beats. . . Charnas’s engrossing work is one of the few hip-hop sagas to take the music as seriously as its maker.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Whenever I’ve been asked why Dilla was special, I didn’t feel like I had the right vocabulary to explain his importance―specifically the way he made work that was so perfectly imperfect that it redefined the way I thought about art. Dan Charnas to the rescue. He scaled the mountain of Dilla’s complex career and sent back instructions so that others could make the climb. This book is a must for everyone interested in illuminating the idea of unexplainable genius.” ―
QUESTLOVE

“J Dilla turned what one generation deemed musical error into what the next knew to be musical innovation. In this splendid book, Dan Charnas offers an uncanny mix of research and vision, documentation and interpretation, plenitude and momentum. Dilla Time is definitive. And exhilarating.” ―
MARGO JEFFERSON, author of Negroland

“The greatest hip-hop producer of all time is getting the love and care his legacy deserves. Dilla Time is a master class.” ―
DREAM HAMPTON

“With deep love and beautiful detail, this book gives credit where credit is most deserved.” ―
DANYEL SMITH, author of Shine Bright

“With this assiduously researched, stirringly told, and expansively elucidated accounting of J Dilla’s life as muse, mythos, and generationally transformative composer of hip-hop beats, Dan Charnas has provided readers with an alchemist’s cookbook of its titular, wizardly subject.” ―
GREG TATE, author of Flyboy in the Buttermilk

“In the way that J Dilla’s music was a portal for us to hear our world and feel the pulse of life anew, Charnas has made a portal through which to understand our time―historical time, musical time, and James Yancey’s own time―in a new way. Dilla Time is a book that will be read and reread with as much pleasure as we have listened and relistened to Dilla’s music. A masterpiece.”
―JEFF CHANG, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

“I look at J Dilla as a man who redefined the word ‘innovative.’ This book makes you feel like you traveled his journey every single step.”
―DJ PREMIER

"How can wrong be right? How can one be both universally revered and massively under-appreciated? Filled with impeccable reportage, elegant prose, and incandescent anecdotes,
Dilla Time is more than an urgently needed biography of hip hop’s most revolutionary producer. It is a testament to the never-ending struggle between creativity and mortality." ―ROB KENNER, author of The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle

Dan Charnas -- journalist, screenwriter, record producer, teacher -- was one of the first writers for The Source and part of a generation of young writers who helped create hip-hop journalism.

Charnas penned cover stories, features, reviews and columns for a variety of publications on artists like L.L. Cool J, Ice Cube, A Tribe Called Quest, N.W.A. and Public Enemy.

Dan began his music business career in the mailroom of the seminal rap label Profile Records, eventually becoming Rap A&R and Promotion Manager -- working on projects from Run-D.M.C., Dana Dane, Special Ed, Rob Base, Special Ed and DJ Quik.

In 1991, he was recruited by Def Jam-founder Rick Rubin to run the rap department of his new Warner Bros. joint venture, American Recordings. Charnas, as VP of A&R and Marketing, oversaw projects including Sir Mix-A-Lot's double-platinum single "Baby Got Back" (the #1 Billboard Pop Single of 1992), DJ Kool's gold anthem "Let Me Clear My Throat," and Chino XL's acclaimed "Here To Save You All," which influenced emcees from Eminem to 50 Cent.

In the late 90s, Charnas met actor/director Forest Whitaker and became VP of Music for Spirit Dance Entertainment, where he managed Whitaker's label deal with Sony/Epic. It was at Spirit Dance that Charnas resumed his writing career, this time for film and TV.

Charnas has written comedy for MTV's "The Lyricist Lounge Show" and BET's "Comic View." He was a Music Supervisor for Showtime's "Interscope Presents The Next Episode." He was also the Head Writer for FitTV/Discovery Channel's "Guru 2 Go."

In the magazine world, Charnas was Editorial Director for Aquarian Times, an international yoga magazine; and a columnist for Profile Magazine (the online magazine about dating & relationships).

Currently, Charnas writes about culture, race, and politics for a number of publications, including the Washington Post and the New York Press. His writing has also appreared in Scratch Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, the Austin American Statesman and dozens of other newspapers.

Charnas graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude with Distinction from Boston University. His thesis, "Musical Apartheid In America," examined white America's 400-year-long relationship of ambivalence to Black culture; the legacy of racial segregation in the music industry; and the potential of hip-hop in resolving that ambivalence, transforming the industry and the entire culture.

Charnas received his Master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where he won a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship, the school's top honor. Charnas was also awarded the Lynton Fellowship for Book Writing, and the Sackett Graduate Award.

His book, "The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop," is the epic, 40-year narrative of the executives, entrepreneurs, hustlers and handlers who turned rap music into the world's predominant pop culture. Culled from over 300 interviews with top industry figures and artists, and nearly a decade of research, "The Big Payback" will be published by New American Library/Penguin in 2010.

Currently, Charnas is the managing editor of InteractiveOne, overseeing websites like BlackPlanet.com, NewsOne.com, TheUrbanDaily.com and HelloBeautiful.com.

Huge Dilla fan here since 90s pharcyde and tribe days and not going to lie, had apprehension on how the life of Dilla would be described by Dan Charnas and if there was any clout-chasing by the author. I'm an absolute fan of him now with also the utmost respect for his journalistic integrity and understanding the scope and endeavor he undertook to describe someone such as Dilla, which could be quite sensitive for many fans such as myself having seen during his time and influence to not get credit, appreciation, etc until he was long gone and have now become trendy to be a fan.
Dan did an amazing job in all angles. Describing the life, breaking down his style technically with music theort, and being critical of dilla as well where warranted with all fairness and objectivity.

Finished this book in basically two sitting as I could not stop. Reading it just brought me back to my high school and college years and all the details within the book just helped complete the picture of stories I was already aware of during those days as fan of his music and sound. Dan did not shy away from critique where it warranted, where many authors may romanticize a subject. Dan was absolutely fair and consistent and even critical of Ma Dukes with appropriate context. It all makes the objectivity of the book even more compelling. All items I recall, growing up during those times were consistent as well, with the much more detail and color Dan brought helping bring much more clarity for me and the background story of many of these things I recalled and why Dilla made those decisions at the time.

Dan also being a music journalist as well as I believe a record scout, also brought a great music theory ability to break down the music at a interesting technical level on what made dilla unique and where we also see many of the musicians after dilla were influenced and where current music has been influenced.
I definitely found myself many times in reading the book, to pull up these tracks he was describing to listen to it in his way of breaking it down to bring even more color to many of these songs I've had on constant rotation for years.

I have such great appreciation to the author for doing this book and dilla's legacy such incredible justice and beyond just any basic romanticized biography.

I was aware of Dilla and his production, but not someone who generally reads music bios. This was recommended to me and I am glad it was. A compelling story of a talented innovator. I often find biographies are either hatchet jobs making someone look horrible or some enamored of their subject they gloss over anything that doesn’t make the subject look like a genius saint with a plan. This paints a well rounded and honest picture of the man. The author did an excellent job of breaking down the more technical/compositional aspect of what made JD so transgressive and ahead of his time. All in all and excellent portrait of an artist and the co text in which he worked. I believe they are making a documentary or a biopic, based on this. If they stick to the text it will be great.

I have been a casual fan for a long time, never knew a lot of what this book covered or how far reaching his contributions to music were. Did a good job of portraying him as human without resorting to rumors and gossip. The author did a very respectful job telling all about J Dilla and the Detroit music scene.

After the first few chapters I got the sense that the author loved Dilla, loves Hip Hop, loves Detroit and loves Dilla’s entire network of family, friends and musicians. This book has all the noble characteristics of great literature. There are no cartoon sketches of good guys and bad guys. This is not Dilla hagiography. Yet the book seems to elevate everything it touches. I suppose it’s just good old-fashioned humanity. If you read it you will be in the hands of a very talented guide. Grab a copy and trust the author to take you on a spin through a wonderful and fascinating neighborhood of popular American music.
