«Sexual nerds. That is what BDSM people are, behind all the pretense...»
From critically-acclaimed creator Stjepan Šejić (Death Vigil, Ravine, Aphrodite IX, Witchblade) comes Sunstone, a love story like no other.

Lisa's tastes were always...unique. Longing to be restrained, without restrain. Lisa always felt like something was missing from her love life─until she met Ally. Ally was implacably ordinary─successful job, nice house, an average childhood─except for her preference for bedroom domination.

Originally posted on DeviantArt, this books collects the first volume of the often erotic, always amusing, and surprisingly heartfelt Sunstone.

Re-read 1/16/20: I didn't love this quite as much on re-read as I did the first time I read it, but it was still really good and I'm excited to finally dive further into the series!

Original read 12/11/18: I LOVED THIS SO MUCH OMG. The only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 star is bc the sex scenes were fade to black but everything else about this was PERFECT. *kisses my gay ass fingertips*

If I catch you reading Fifty Shades of Grey, I am going to politely remove it from your grasp and hand you a copy of Sunstone instead. And if you’re into great characters and wonderful, sweet, funny romance stories that explore sexuality, then I am also going to hand you a copy of Sunstone.

To be clear, this is a story that heavily features BDSM, but I want you to set aside any preconceived notions you have about that and read it anyway. First of all, it is an incredibly beautiful, informative, and healthy exploration of sexuality that forces us to acknowledge that sex is a completely normal part of our lives which we need to stop being so damn taboo about. Now, while BDSM might be a kink for some people, that does not make it any less important as a part of sexual exploration. But the key to BDSM is something that, unlike Fifty Shades, Sunstone makes very clear: BDSM is about consent and it is about trust.

Lisa and Ally meet online and begin a friendship based on their shared kink and their respective roles as sub and domme. Their first in-person meeting has all the awkward moments that anyone on a first date can imagine, and as their relationship blossoms beyond the boudoir, it’s hard not to fall for the characters as well. Yes, this book features BDSM and erotica, but just as importantly, it is about very human characters that many of us can relate to in many ways. They explore their roles as sub and domme, but, mainly through Lisa, the story also deals with friendship, relationships, and that butterfly feeling you get in your stomach (and elsewhere) when you fall in love.

It appears at a glance here at the beginning of some reviews that it is important to quickly write something like, “well, it’s not my kinda thing,” or “Whoa! I was not expecting that!” as this series focuses on an F/F relationship with a (light, he defensively says!) (but constantly present) bdsm theme. I read everything from picture books to Russian novels to YA to romances now, so knowing the series focused on this topic wasn’t something that would make me run away from it, let’s say. I got it from the library system (which NO library in our system had bought until recently, probably because of the topic) because I had just read and fallen in love (especially) with the artwork of Stjepan Šejić’s Harleen, though that story had this darkly dangerous and possibly seductive aspect of the love story where a psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinn, tries to “save” Joker and gets sucked down into his madness, becoming the wild and dangerous Harley Quinn instead. Harleen will make my Best Of comics list of the year, I know this already.

So Sunstone, the title of this series, is also the “safe word” that two women (one with no actual experience in this area) use for their developing “play” together (and I have the feeling based on the unthreatening tone of the series so far that they will never feel the need to use it). The art, again, is gorgeous, sexy, mostly in shades of red. This is fantasy, so it’s okay if everything is red, if the two main characters, Allison and Lisa, are redheads, and Ally’s best friend and former partner, a male, Alan--who designs furniture and other equipment for this kind of play--is also a redhead. What does it mean that every single person we meet is basically gorgeous, and that these three in particular look very similar and have similar-sounding names? And they go to a club to help develop their fantasies, The Crimson Club?

I’m not sure yet, but I have to say, almost nothing explicitly physical happens (yet), which would seem to be the point here about desire/sex, that much of it is about performance, role-playing, the imagination, what goes on in one’s head (maybe) even more than what happens between and with bodies. This is really (so far?) quite sweet, a kind of fictional introduction to bdsm (for Lisa and us) in a romantic, we’re-all-just-friends, setting, where everything is beautiful and they mainly talk all the time as a kind of foreplay, I think.

Part of Lisa’s (she’s writing this) introduction to bdsm seems to be an argument for how normal and important desire is in its various forms. So many of the people in this are described as “nerds” on the various technologies of this practice. In their personal lives they work (though in the way of romance, from Austen to now, these people seem to talk a lot and have coffee in upscale coffee shops and go to sophisticated clubs) and they also take it all down a level and all play video games and are Trekkie geeks, and Ally reads comics. . . they are just (gorgeous) yuppies, not some kind of stereotypical alt freaks (whatever that might even mean, I know). The point is that bdsm play is perfectly all within the range of “normal,” and they are all normal, not pervs any more than anyone else are pervs! Sex positivity!

So this came out five years ago, and I think it is a very good artistic accomplishment. It’s basically a romance where two women who share a similar kink meet online, become friends, want to have sex with each other, but find out that they may be getting into more than they bargained for (no, not a dungeon! I mean love! It’s a romance, I said!). It’s lovely dreamy soft-lit seductive/hot red coloring, cloudy pastel backgrounds, the very foundation of fantasy. It’s about the importance of trust, an issue in any developing relationship, but this one also asks the eternal question you all want to know: Can there be a true bond that is formed through bondage?

Are any of these people “real”? Well, we also meet Alan’s partner Cris (not into bdsm, but designs equipment with him, and he makes fun of the whole bondage thing so we won’t take it all TOO seriously), Cassie and Tom, and they are all also red-haired people! Hmm! And this takes place in autumn, with its reddening leaves. . . but it doesn’t matter, it’s romance, fantasy and (safely?) sweeter than I expected. I’ll read on! I do this for you, as your friendly reviewer! Hey, somebody’s gotta do it! Might as well be me (joining the thousands of those who have already read and rated it).

I'd really like to read Sunstone from the perspective of someone who isn't intimately familiar with BDSM culture. As a submissive myself, I went into Sunstone thinking it would "normalize" BDSM; it'd make BDSM seem "regular," so to speak, and demonstrate that kink culture isn't something to be frightened of, but rather, something quite romantic - personal, exciting, and deeply intimate. Reading it, I did think, "well, this is cute, and sweet, and charming and funny, and it sure does make BDSM seem regular, and make kink culture out as nothing to be frightened of - something innately human, romantic, exciting, and deeply intimate." Putting down the book, though, I realize... well, I ALREADY thought those things. So all Sunstone really did was reaffirm my beliefs. Ah, poop.

So, I'm not sure how well Sunstone really achieves its goal of broadening the horizons of "vanilla" (that's what us BDSM people call not-BDSM people) readers, and making BDSM seem a little more accessible and appropriate than not at all. Trying to gain acceptance and understanding, I guess, with a readerbase that has no motivation to accept it, and no basis of understanding it. I already accept BDSM, as something approaching the core of my very being, so, I can't say either way. What I can do is tell you exactly why I liked this book. It might not be especially useful, but if you're considering reading it yourself, you probably already know if you're turned off by the subject matter. I'll fill you in, then, on what I thought of the actual content.

So, Sunstone... it's a romcom, really. And, like a romcom, it breaks most all the rules of believable human interaction almost immediately. Neither a thumbs down or thumbs up, this is merely an observation: Sunstone isn't realistic in the slightest. Kind of how the typical "boy meets girl" romcom plot is a ridiculous oversimplification of the actual scenarios that inspire it, Sunstone's "girl meets girl" plot is an excuse for little more than a sweet, borderline saccharine romance tale. Lisa and Ally meet online and within two months they're walking naked through each other's houses. That might be a thing that happens, sure, and the book does a decent job of rationalizing the intense, nervous emotion that it entails, but, boiled down to its elements, it's a sappy love story, fast-tracked to get to the meat of the relationship.

That's not a problem, of course. A sappy love story lives and dies on its characters, after all, and writer and artist Stjepan Šejić has created two genuinely wonderful people in his characters of Lisa and Ally. They play to tropes, just as the overall plot does, but again - there's certainly nothing wrong with that. It suits the genre perfectly. Both girls are silly, shy, a little "crazy" perhaps, but they've got huge hearts, and we explore their blossoming relationship in a way that makes us care for them. Their inner voices, in particular, are very natural and believable, though certainly exaggerated, in a way that makes them... well, they're like friends you haven't met yet, really. They're very appealingly rough human beings - that kind of "imperfect in all the perfect ways" quality that makes their mundane lives exciting to read, instead of just dull. Like I said - it works perfectly for a romcom. (It helps that Šejić has a wit and warmth to his writing that seems to come instinctively - nothing feels particularly forced. Again, it's very natural.)

Ally is desperately lonely girl who lives her dreams with no-one to share them with. Lisa is a repressed, excited girl who is exploring her desires. The two fall in love, and are, of course, perfect for each other. There are complications, there are perfect moments of pure bliss, there are dopey and terrible unromantic scenes of uneventful domestic time-wasting, and that's really all there is to it. Two nice characters fall in love in a way that makes you want to read about their falling in love. It's the perfect execution of a very traditional formula. What else is there to say?

Oh. Right. Also, there's bondage sex in it.

Honestly (and I'm not too sure how honest I should be about this), this book's biggest strength - at least for me - is the way it manages to so perfectly capture the feelings of the bondage fetish, masochism, and even sadism. Like, it seems to focus very specifically on the urges as if they are innate and primal; there's no sugar-coated guff about "experimenting", it's all "since I was a teenager I've wanted to be dominated" stuff. Frank, open, and... well... yeah, normalized completely. It isn't some huge taboo, it isn't treated with a deft touch or a subtle twist, it's just all out in the open. "I've always wanted to be tied up" - that's how people think! It's so respectful and regular and it warms my heart that it doesn't tip-toe around the subject like it's alien or weird. Hell, it feels so normal, so factual, that when the actual sex happened I was kind of taken aback. Like... oh, full frontal female nudity. Oh, right, yeah, this is an erotic romantic comedy. I had legitimately forgotten. And now there's tits. Ohhhh myyyyy.

So, hey, here's a dilemma - am I meant to rate this book on how sexy it is? Because, y'know, it is pretty sexy (again, it aligns with my desires and interests, so, not exactly a trustworthy judgement call coming from me), but I don't know if... like, is that okay to say? "This book's hot." I mean, it's not like porn (well it is but shhhh), but some scenes got me a bit hot under the collar, certainly. A bit turned-on, so to speak. Usually I wouldn't mention either way if a book "accomplished" that, so, what, IS that an accomplishment? I have never reviewed an erotic comic before. Not even Sex Criminals was quite on this level of... sexy... sex... sextimes.

On the other hand... it is very similar to Sex Criminals. Fraction and Zdarksy explored sexual awakenings and exploration and how it links with romance and humanity and life, and Šejić has basically done the same here. It's a lot more to-the-point than Sex Criminals, though. Sex Criminals is a clever book, with a minimalist art style and storytelling intrigue and a sort of sci-fi hook towards the end of the first volume. Sunstone spares no room for subtly, with deft, richly illustrated panels of squeaking latex and nude bodies and women having orgasms. And... sitting on the bus and buying coffee and playing videogames. It's not complex, per se, but you know, I wouldn't dare say Sunstone isn't varied.

I said Sex Criminals was important. Is Sunstone important? The fact that I can only name one genuine contemporary is perhaps a little concerning, but honestly, when it comes down to brass tacks, Sunstone is fluff. Really light, fluffy, lesbian romantic comedy. It's also deeply erotic, and explores the emotions and sensations attached to prevalent yet oft misunderstood set of interconnecting fetishes. Is that important? Is it important that this stuff can be represented in the same frank, normalized way as your the overused and generally accepted as red "boy meets girl" archetype? Perhaps it is. Sunstone, perhaps, is important. I won't say, though, that Sunstone isn't cheap, quasi-manipulative romantic fluff. Important? Sure. Artful? ...maybe not so much. I love it a lot, though. It hit my buttons (no pun intended) pretty flawlessly, it's stunningly illustrated, and it's cute. It's a feelgood, adorable, thoroughly entertaining time with some new gay best friends of yours who fall in love, who just also happen to often have insatiable kinky gay sex. Why not, eh? I guess, in its own way, on its own time, Sunstone really is very, very important.

A lot of great reviews have already been written on this work so I'll keep this short and point out my impressions as a non-BDSM lesbian who has triggers around exploitive porn.

First off, is it exploitive? No.

Does a male author/illustrator somehow adversely impact the depiction of a f/f relationship? No.

Is this in the fantasy genre (i.e. vampires, demons, unicorns, dragons)? No. The cover looks like it may be but this is a contemporary romance in our everyday world.

Is BDSM well represented? I think so...At least I thought it did a good job of normalizing the desires from both the domme and sub perspectives, where the kink aspect of their sexuality was innate in both characters from early on in their lives. It didn't seem fetishized or anything.

Are the characters lesbian? No. It seems both characters are heterosexual and this is their first time with another woman...so, I guess, ultimately bisexual. If you've read 'Owning Regina' by Lorelei Elstrom it has a similar take where the kink (and good partner match) takes precedence as a sexual orientation in itself over the actual gender/sex of the partner.

Does the lack of woman on woman experience or bisexuality make the f/f aspect any less sincere? No.

Is there nudity? Yes.

Is it erotic? For some maybe.

Is this a romance? Yes. It actually ends up being a fluffy and sweet romance between Ally and Lisa.

Are the characters good? Yep. Despite this seeming to be only about BDSM, the author spent time showing these characters in their friendship (the non-BDSM aspect) vs them in their BDSM play and also independent of each other in their own lives. Ally, though the domme, is a rather geeky gamer type person while Lisa, the sub, actually shows some dominance outside of the BDSM.

Overall, with this read, we get gorgeous artwork and a sweet romance with a nice dose of humor that also happens to have graphic depictions of Lisa and Ally's sexual relationship.

Recommend? Yes.

Bullet Review:

This was recommended, oddly enough, by my local comic bookstore guy - and he recommended it to me, not for the hot lesbian bondage sex but for the insane humor and narrative.

You know what? He hit the nail on the head - this book is hilarious and charming, with the most adorable narrative voice I've read in a long while. I've never read any erotic comics before, certainly no lesbian BDSM, but this was absolutely charming and adorable!

"Fifty Shades", eat your heart out!

Side note: did you notice the offhand remark to Twilight?! 10 points if you do!

Reread:

Still as hilarious as the first time. Can't wait to hop onto Vol 2 finally!

Seeing a book called Sunstone from Top Cow comics, I expected some kind of fantasy book. I never could have guessed that Sunstone would refer to the safe word between a BDSM couple. The subject manner isn't really my thing. That being said Sejic writes really snappy dialogue and is a gifted artist. The book reminds me of the humor and art style of Strangers in Paradise crossed with Fifty Shades of Gray.

This was excellent. I saw the cover of this book and was intrigued, but I'll he honest, it looks a little like it could border on sexual porn more than tasteful BDSM. I was wrong. One of my friends read this and loved it, she said it was tastefully done and beautiful and I knew I had to try it. I'm so glad that I have...

This is the story of Ally and Lisa, two women who are both excited by the ideas of BDSM but have never had a lot of luck finding people to trust enough to practice it with. BDSM is about trust and love. It's a two way agreement between sexual nerds, and it's all about TRUST. Often BDSM gets a bad reputation of abuse and violence, when it's done right it's not that at all and this story truly shows that.
This is not a porno, it's not a lot of naked women having lesbian relationships. This is a love story with some exotic twists and it's done incredibly well. It's a lesbian story written by a man about BDSM, and it's done WELL! That's something you don't often see and it's something I really appreciate having read.

Also, the artwork and page layouts are divine and stunning. This is a one man team of author and illustrator and it's beautifully handled. The colours, shades and style flow together wonderfully and there is a definite theme of Final Fantasy-style art (very cool).

In fact, these are two normal ladies and that is what I think this gets across the best. They chat, they go out, they play games and they generally have fun. All whilst being responsible and sensible with their sexual preferences and games.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see what BDSM is really all about and I will for sure be picking up the next few volumes.

The only character I didn't like was the guy friend Alan who was a bit of a dick sometimes. Otherwise, this was fab!
4*s overall

male fantasies... male fantasies...........

to be honest, this is the white lesbian sex fantasy with an audience of fetishizing male audiences equivalent to yaoi's white gay sex fantasies with fetishizing female audiences. I don't understand all the hype and good reviews around it like I seriously dont. In my opinion, this comic would have been 5283094820 times better if a woman or a non-cis man had made it.

Ugh, the art and characters and plot were all so.. generic!! the writing was also........ poor. I wanted to like this so much because wlw comics aren't that common but like???? this just. wasn't good.

anyway!!

the redeeming qualities were that like, I guess for what it is (a nsfw webcomic that got published), it's not the WORST thing ever.... and the art was good and definitely took a lot of technical skill, even if it was a bit bland and the character designs were like, same face and body but different hair..? I mean it could have been worse, but it was just weird and meh.

ALSO!
I'm sorry, but you're not oppressed for liking BDSM lololololol

some of the other reviews are like "wow I'm so glad for the normalization of healthy BDSM practices this has!" and like.................... I mean this is exponentially better than 50 sh*des- that's not saying much- but I think that the concept behind a kinky, lesbian webcomic featuring loner gamer girls and a shaggy male BDSM aficionado drawn and created by a middle aged white man– it just doesn't sit right with me!?! idk it was more fetishized than respectful and just..... ewlechhdshf. I feel gross !!

"We talked and laughed and I knew two things. That I was happy and...I liked her. A lot."

━━━━━━━━━━━ ♡ ━━━━━━━━━━━

Adorable. Really beautifully done, too. The art is just...beyond stunning, wow. Really enjoyed this story and found it to be really endearing. I liked the balance between the depiction of their...less balanced dynamic, but also their dynamic as loving friends and lovers, on the regular. The art is explicit, which made me therefore confused when everything went fade-to-black? (-1 😋).

The other little quibble I had was with the fmc's dominant male friend, Alan. He was alright, I guess, but he occupied more time than necessary and said "hey what? you're two hot chicks kissing and I'm a guy" when Ally and Lisa they were being affectionate with him in the room. Bitch please, I'm sure you can keep your dick down just fine, or at least not verbalise your irrelevant issues 🙄. Ally and Lisa have my whole heart, I love them. Overall, a delightfully refreshing read.

(Bro I am trying to find a quote but ctrl+f doesn't work in comics argh)

Lisa and Ally thought they could get together for some BDSM entertainment with no emotional strings attached. Hahaha, you silly girls, that would be too easy. Five graphic novel volumes worth of feeeelings later, the series concluded, and Sunstone fans everywhere almost freaked out until we were told there would be spinoffs. It's too hard to let go of such a geeky, adorable, complex-because-people-are-dorks romance vibe like this! If you have triggers for BDSM elements, clearly this won't work for you, but if you're even neutral and you want more stories in your life about two ladies falling in love? Check this out.

ALSO: This comic proves that superhero comics don't *have* to objectify women. Because if you can create a five volume series about two women who do BDSM and are often in lingerie, and they're not objectified? Then there's no excuse for so many women who punch supervillains to be drawn the way they sometimes are.

5 stars, without question

This was fun, sweet, sexy, gorgeously drawn and very informative. And yes, I list it among all the good attributes.

It's nice to see a book/comic lift the society taboo of BDSM and show it in a wholesome and nerdy light. It demystifyies it a lot, and helps correct some serious misconceptions about BDSM caused by stuff like Fifty Shades of Sh*t (yes, it's not the real name, but it's way more accurate)

Surprisingly enough, I'd classify it as more of a romance or even a rom-com than an erotica. The sex is somehow not the focus of the story, even though it's all about bondage. I'm not sure how Šejić did it but I'm impressed.

And I love the description "sex LARP". It's funny and accurate

This is an "it was okay", with the art being around 3*-4* (a bit too cutesy for my taste) and the story unfortunately so much less that it rounded to 2*.

I'm afraid I was bored. The reason most likely is the same reason why a lot of other YA and NA bores me: I'm past that age and in general I'm not interested in many of the current problems, a lot of which are artificially pushed or caused by the media in my opinion.

Next comes that as someone who's entered the lifestyle at around that age herself, I don't at all see any semblance to my own experiences. I can't connect with this, it's some mixture of teen culture with media-represented BDSM which is unfamiliar to me. It reads more like something written for TV than coming from real life.

Why e.g. anyone would need a BDSM-bed before even having met someone else, or why people would be willing to meet at home, without a backup, and then jump into BDSM-play without the slightest discussion of what takes place, which stop or slowwords are used, what the Herpes, Hepatitis, and HIV state of each is, and so on--beats me. Not what I ever experienced, not what I'd recommend anyone does, and I'd think these days really unlikely given the many excellent BDSM-primers.

In short:

Really nice art, but a largely illogical, twee story, and I'm afraid the BDSM as far as I read this wasn't SSC/RACK either. It didn't help that I wasn't feeling any connection with any of the characters. But I'm sure there will be lots of people loving this. It probably needs to be read by the under-30-crowd and manga-lovers. It definitely is "cute" and has that feel. I simply may be the wrong target audience.

This is my first encounter with artist Stjepan Šejić and I have to say I enjoy his style. I really took my time with it, reading it in small increments and absorbing all the artwork.

The story is about Ally and Lisa, two women who meet online over BDSM and start exchanging ideas about their fantasies. After two months of increasing engaging encounters they decide to meet in real life. The two straight women connect and become friends with bdsm domme-sub benefits and slowly realise they are not so straight afterall.

It’s a real rom-com dressed up in a fettish package. Lot’s of extreme outfits, outrageous riggings and nudity. But it’s not porn, it’s not exploitive and there is a real sweet (almost sappy) love story here. I'm no expert in BDSM so I can’t say if it’s all accurate but it being a graphic novel I will have to guess the scenes are somewhat stylized for our viewing pleasure.

It was great exploring Ally and Lisa’s blossoming relationship. They had a natural and believable feel about them (love the goofy facial expressions!)

f/f
Themes: bondage, domme-sub relationship, beautiful artwork, two sexual nerds, lots of dudes with long hair and goatees, seeing all the gear I have to say I would be too claustrophobic for bondage :-)

Highly unrealistic and fetishized BDSM comic. The topic of safety is completely brushed over. The story itself is lacking and the graphics quickly became very repetitive.

More like 2.5*

First: Please, if you have the intention of doing anything kinky portrayed in this graphic novel (or in general) PLEASE do intensive research and do not try anything without the proper safety. This was highly unrealistic in a lot of aspects. Be safe.

This was disappointing. A graphic novel that is about a BDSM relationship and is not porn?! That's right on my alley.

And it was like that... kind of.

The art was gorgeous, some pictures I want to rip off and display them (not going to do that).
The emotions between the two females advanced way to fast for me but I seen worse.

But the BDSM aspect.

I became really interested in the kink community this past months and been doing research and there were A LOT of things that were no OK in the portrayal of a D/S relationship.

I get it, is fiction. Almost nobody wants to read the negotiation of a scene. I know. Is a fantasy. I know. They have not inexperience for the most part. I know.

But you DO NOT blindfold, gag and restrain a person in the first date. It makes it even worse that she was her first submissive. There's no mention of taking classes or security measures beside the "safe word" established in the middle of snogging. For me it represents little care for the submissive, and I can not romanticize that. And of course is potentially dangerous in real life.

Not everything was bad, but the good aspects came with a but... The mention of safety and testing was too brief. The aftercare scene was not totally accurate (aftercare does not equal cuddles, it may involve them).

There were unrealistic things that made me don't love this and cringe a lot. I was with my eyes half open hoping no one ended death. Everything was too rushed.

Let me be clear, I really appreciated a lot the portrayal of BDSM in a good light, the normalization of it. There is a lot of prejudice in real life and I love that two independent, intelligent woman can have this relationship in fiction without being about abuse or objectification, it is just a fun way to explore sexuality and I can see that in Sunstone. But I just couldn't past these things. It wasn't sexy for me because it wasn't safe.

Good artwork with nice page layouts and colouring.

The story is sweet and a little sappy and for a length of 87 pages pretty simple and straight forward. Girl meets girl online, they get to know each other, then decide to meet. Lots of anxiety and girly angst. They meet, they like, they get on with girly bondage. Not too graphic.

Lots of cute latex outfits. Some more pretty good artwork.

36 pages of extra stuff... kinda a lot, right?

Better than ok, but it lacks any kind of tension and is a little too girly for my taste. Probably not going to continue.

This graphic novel gives the reader a glimpse into the secretive world of BDSM and reveals a tenderness unexpected from a physically intense activity. In its way, it's educational, BDSM is not the sole purview of deviants or perverts, "normal" people can have such kinky desires too.

The art is to die for, Sejic was born to illustrate erotica in a sequential manner. The artist is having a lot of fun depicting the bedroom activities of Ally and Lisa.

Whoa! How did that happen?!? Noticed this one on Goodreads Choice Awards 2015 and... After a few hours I completely read all four chapters! Hide in the bushes Fifty Shades Of Gray, this one was way better. Great story, beautifully drawn, funny dialogues, deep and interesting characters. All I want now is more!

Every now and again I like to read something out of my normal range, my comfort zone even. Maybe its my age or my mind working, I just don't know, but I have really enjoyed stretching my brains out a bit to indulge in something new this past couple of years.
Sunstone was revealed to me by watching John Wick's unreview series on Youtube. I went there to watch a review on a roleplaying game and he also threw out some ideas of what he is reading right now. Sunstone was one of his suggestions.

Note: THIS BOOK IS FOR ADULTS!

Sorry, but I had to get that out of the way. This book is a love story to be sure but it is not your typical story of how these two ladies meet. It is really about learning who you are and trying to find someone in this world who shares what you want and need and love can spring from that.
This book is beautifully drawn and written and Mr. Sejic has outdone himself on this book. It is intelligent and sexy and super super hot in ways that i will not mention here. Give this book a read and I promise you that you will not be disappointed. It is simply amazing and I cannot wait to buy some more of these volumes.
Let me reiterate that this is not smut. I don't read smut.....ok the Beauty books by Anne Rice are mighty naughty, but I liked them a lot. This is beautiful in an meaningful, artful and sexual way and the world can use some more of things like this in my opinion.

Nuff Said! Try this one out if you want to feel something!

3.5 stars

Stjepan Šejić has the most beautiful, breath-taking, detailed art that I literally want to scream whenever he posts sneak peaks of it on his Facebook. [heart eyes] I've read Death Vigil a few years ago and LOVED it and I've been meaning to give Sunstone a go but somehow never got around to it. The time has come friends!

The story is actually really sweet, I loved LOVED both Ally (pls accept my hand in marriage) and Lisa and I'm so SO glad that none of the story was exploitative in any way. It was so nice to see people being supportive of each other and feel accepted. People finding people who make them feel good and accepted always makes me soft.

Now, I'm pretty vanilla and actually have no idea if anything portrayed here was realistic and as with every story, whether in a book or a movie/tv show, things get a bit more romanticized and you don't really get to see every single thing that led to something. So I'm taking everything with a grain of salt as I wouldn't exactly do some things which you encounter here (not sex related things, just basic things like going alone to the house of someone you've known for a few months and without any backup) but like I said, that might just be me and my paranoid self.

Anyway, ALLY.

Funny, sexy, sweet and all the eye candy you can handle!

I generally am not a big fan of graphic novels but a friend recommended this series and boy am I glad she did. I wasn't really sure what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised when I ended up falling in love with the main characters.

This is not just a graphic novel to stare at (half) naked women, the story line is absolutely captivating. It tells of how Ally and Lisa met through their shared interest in BDSM.
While due to the absolutely stunning artwork this book is extremely sexy, the story itself is surprisingly sweet and adorable which is a combination I never even thought possible when dealing with (elements of) BDSM yet Stjepan Šejić has managed to pull it off.

There are 5 (comic) books in the Sunstone series and after reading vol 1 I can't wait to start part 2!

De vertelstijl is helemaal spot on.

Uiteraard.
