Calculus: A Complete Course, Seventh Edition (7th Edition) Hardcover – January 15, 2009
Proven in North America and abroad, this classic text has earned a reputation for excellent accuracy and mathematical rigour. Previous editions have been praised for providing complete and precise statements of theorems, using geometric reasoning in applied problems, and for offering a range of applications across the sciences. Written in a clear, coherent, and readable form, Calculus: A Complete Coursemakes student comprehension a clear priority.
This seventh edition features a new co-author, Dr. Christopher Essex, who has been invited to contribute his unique style and approach to the subject material. Instructors and students will appreciate revised exercises, greater emphasis on differential equations, and new pedagogical features.

About the Author
Robert Adams joined the Mathematics Department at the University of British Columbia in 1966 after completing a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Toronto. His research interests in analysis led to the 1975 publication of a monograph, Sobolev Spaces, by Academic Press. It remained in print for 23 years. A second edition, joint with his colleague Professor John Fournier, was published in 2003. Professor Adams's teaching interests led to the 1982 publication of the first of his many calculus texts by Addison Wesley. These texts are now used worldwide. With a keen interest in computers, mathematical typesetting, and illustration. In 1984 Professor Adams became the first Canadian author to typeset his own textbooks using TeX on a personal computer. Since then he has also done all the illustrations for his books using the MG software program that he developed with his colleague, Professor Robert Israel. Now retired from UBC, Professor Adams is currently engaged in preparing the seventh editions of his textbooks and pursuing his interest in the Linux operating system.
Dr. Christopher Essex. is Director, Program in Theoretical Physics, and Professor of Applied Mathematics, Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2013Format: HardcoverI fully disagree with the negative comments about this book. After comparing many available
Calculus books I came to the conclusion that this one is the best for applied
calculus purposes, i.e. for engineers and physicist.
The main and really huge difference which sets this book apart from
all the others so called "modern" calculus books is that the author
explains and encourages the use of differentials and differential elements (of area, volume
and so on) in solving typical real life problems leading
to the integrals as the solutions. This is the main point
of use of the differentials (not in the approximation problems).
Not doing it is the main plague of all other modern
calulus books. Being pre-ocuppied with the not correct definition of these
differential elements (try to read something about differential forms)
authors of the modern Calculus miss the most important
point of the Calculus = being the tool to solve the real life problems and they
cripple their calculus books.
Other 2 positive aspects of this books is that it has a nice small chapter about
the general curviliear coordinates which I have never seen in any std. Calculus book
and it has many problems from physics and engineering, motivating so the interest in Calculus.
On the other hand I agree that sometimes it needs quite some thinking to get
to the point of explanations.
If people are interested in very clear almost like hand held explanation of Calculus
(without the bonus of knowing what are and how the differential elements are
supposed to be used) I recommend the book by Anton, Bivens and Davis ( I have the version "Early transcedentials").
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2013Format: HardcoverThis is a solid calculus book and for the 1000 pages it goes quite deep into the subject. There are minor problems.
1. Your algebra must be close to perfect and even then you sometimes struggle to find out witch steeps the book took to get from 1 equation to the next, after all you are probably new to this.
2. Solutions manual is a MUST have, since the book is trying to cover allot there are not that many or detailed examples in the chapter.
3. Math books on this subject are wast. Probably hundreds of books about calculus are out there so standards are high and this is not the best book to learn about calculus.
I recommend it as solid book about calculus and a great problem bank (with the solutions manual) but there are better books out there to teach you this subject.(And cheaper)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2012Format: HardcoverAvoid this book like the plague.
Its very poor as a mathematical learning tool. #
Crap definitions and really frustrating sentences put this book to sleep after five hours. Its not that its difficult to understand its just the way the author tries in vane to sound intelligent like some 14 years old. Its pathetic. Brilliance through simplicity this is not.
Terrible layout.
Poor examples that do nothing to refresh our algebraic skill set.
Just avoid it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This book is really useful for any new university students studying mathematics. Its a must-have reference book. While I wouldn't bother going through the entire book, the sections are very clearly presented and allows you to look up certain topics which you may need to brush up on, or need further explanation on.
