Rules for Reformers Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.7 out of 5 stars 348 ratings

In Rules for Reformers, Douglas Wilson poaches the political craft of radical progressives and applies it to Christian efforts in the current culture war. The result is a spicy blend of combat manual and cultural manifesto. Rules for Reformers is a little bit proclamation of grace, a little bit Art of War, and a little bit analysis of past embarrassments and current cowardice, all mixed together with a bunch of advanced knife-fighting techniques. As motivating as it is provocative, Rules for Reformers is just plain good to hear.

Thanks to Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals - a book well-beloved by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and many others - for much of the shrewd advice, and for none of the worldview.

Absolutely A Must Read!
I have finished this absolutely fantastic book, I highly recommend it, I like Douglas Wilson, he always speaks brilliant things in a practical way. I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him. He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable. The Rules for Reformers are as follows: 1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. 2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods. 3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract. 4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor. 5) Reformers must be combative. 6) Reformers must play the long game. 7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics. I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is. The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God. In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

The first two chapters here are not an easy read - at least it wasn’t for me. But these chapters lay the groundwork for the rest of the book, which is practical, historical and wise. I learned more than I wanted (or needed) to know about warfare in those first two chapters — and I would say - they are probably better directed at men in the reading crowd. But the rest of the book gave great optimism in outlook, as well as realism in viewing our current culture - the Kingdom of God - and the covenantal process that God is overseeing in all His world that He governs. This book is typical ‘DW’ style and zings you plenty along the way. A good read - I must say.

Excellent book. Well written. Thought provoking. Usual Doug Wilson humor that makes me laugh when considering serious subjects included like always. Originally bought this book on kindle. Once finished I bought it in print. Reading through it again with a highlighter. This book will help you to step back and see the big picture of serving Christ. Any reformed Christian who is trying to figure out how to use their own gifts to the glory of God should read this book. By seeing the big picture first you can fine tune and hone in on which direction to go to be effective in whatever ways God guides you to serve Him. Excellent. Highly recommend!!!

Douglas Wilson is one of my favorite, most respected modern Christian writers and thinkers. He outlines his rules with clarity and class. His satire is top-tier. My only objection is with the print quality of the book. The dotted lines that show where the paper should be cut (if you've ever used Amazon KDP cover calculator then you'll know which lines I mean) show on some pages, meaning they didn't take the proper time and care while producing the book. I've also found about five typos. But these are just me being persnickety. It's a great work overall, better than I can do.

Like all DW's work, this gives a truly positive view of the future for those who seek to do the good as taught by Jesus and his apostles, who had great boldness and wisdom in what they wrote and did. To quote, as christianity has died and risen many times, so in times of great difficulty God comes through at the last moment, surprising both the world and believers of the time. Many good principles here which you likely won't hear in average Sunday sermons.

I rarely finish books these days. I spend most of my time in the Scriptures because the reading of many books there is no end, and it wearies the body. But books by Douglas Wilson are different. He points me to paths I’ve missed. I feel stronger in the Lord and in the Word because of this book. It was not a waste of time. You should read this book.

The first 1/3 is easy to read for any Christian, the middle 1/3 is hard and will offend most Christians (including me), but press through it because there is mind changing wisdom here, and the latter 1/3 is encouraging.

I give thanks to God for this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading. For Kuyperians, Postmillenialists, Theonomist, Christian Nationalists, and anyone with a Backbone Living in a culture they want to change
Reviewed in Canada on September 13, 2023
Do you live in a culture? Do you want to change it? Do you want to have some kind of real impact on society right here right now? Regardless of your theology, regardless of if you love DW or hate him with the fire of a thousand suns, if you a Christian who has any semblance of a backbone and you want to *do something here on earth, in other words, if you are any kind of Christian other than the kind that rejoices in the constant deluge of awful things happening because it means their escape-rapture-bus is nearer to their station, then this book is for you.
Of course, since DW is indeed a postmillenialist, with a theonomic bent, who baptized babies and feeds them communion, and he can be a bit snarky, there a good chance many average Christians who don’t share those conviction will find something to disagree with, but those will only be tangential points. If you believe we ought to be culturally engaged and that is it is good and right to actually expect that we can be successful, we can actually bring some kind of reformation, this book will strike a chord in your heart (one that will probably lead you to sing Psalms very loudly in public on purpose) and will be an immensely practical guide book.
Listen let’s be honest, the radicals, the Alinsky’s of the world, the baby-murderers, the feminists, the leftists, the trans-ers, the social justice warriors, the big brothers, the inner parties, they are playing to win. They are plying to destroy, and they have a plan. They recognize that they are in a war and they have a strategy, it’s time we start with one too. If we’re going to fight back at all that is. And we need something more concrete and practical that merely “preach the gospel,” we need questions that answer when, where, how, why, to whom do we preach the gospel? How often? With what degree of boldness? Do we retreat? Should we do it in public? On the steps of congress? How do we do what we know we are supposed to do?

So do you want to do something? Do you want to be a working part of a cultural reformation? Do you need more than just live your Christian witness in your job as a gameplan? Do you need real on the ground precocial guidance? READ THIS BOOK. It won’t be perfect for every theological inclination out there, but for almost all of us (those escapist dispy out there excluded) it will be at least one step in the right direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and timely
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2016
A great shame this is only available here in the UK on Kindle, as this is a book which would repay giving to others, and forming a matter for study for church elders and leaders together.

RFR is chock-full of mid-western vernacular but none the worse for that. The author speaks theological truth in a robust way, without equivocation. He is not politically correct, a condition which western secularism has driven the church into.

Ignore the smattering of typos. Focus instead upon the vision that Doug Wilson paints of a vibrant, wholehearted Christianity that seeks to transform our rotting culture from the inside out.

Worth reading at least twice! With a notebook at your side.

If the western church is to be reformed, this is the way to do it.
