About the authors
The son of Norwegian parents, Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 and educated at Repton. He was a fighter pilot for the RAF during World War Two, and it was while writing about his experiences during this time that he started his career as an author.
His fabulously popular children's books are read by children all over the world. Some of his better-known works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, The Witches, and The BFG.
He died in November 1990.
Quentin Blake was born in the suburbs of London in 1932 and has drawn ever since he can remember.
He went to Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, followed by National Service. Then he studied English at Downing College, Cambridge, going on to do a postgraduate teaching diploma at the University of London, followed by life-classes at Chelsea Art School.
He has always made his living as an illustrator, as well as teaching for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art, where he was head of the Illustration department from 1978 to 1986. His first drawings were published in Punch while he was 16 and still at school. He continued to draw for Punch, The Spectator and other magazines over many years, while at the same time entering the world of children's books with A Drink of Water by John Yeoman in 1960.
He is known for his collaboration with writers such as Russell Hoban, Joan Aiken, Michael Rosen, John Yeoman and, most famously, Roald Dahl. He has also illustrated classic books, both for children and adults, including A Christmas Carol and Candide; and created much-loved characters of his own, such as Mister Magnolia and Mrs Armitage. Six of his picture books have been animated and brought to the small screen by Eagle Eye and the BBC, in 'Quentin Blake's Box of Treasures' (2023-24).
In the 1990s and 2000s, Quentin Blake had an additional career as exhibition curator, curating shows in, among other places, the National Gallery, the British Library and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. In the last 20 years he has made larger-scale work for hospitals and healthcare settings in the UK and France where his work can be seen in wards and public spaces, including a scheme for the whole of a new maternity hospital in Angers. His landmark exhibition in 2020 at Hastings Contemporary, 'We Live in Worrying Times' featured a 30-foot mural titled 'The Taxi Driver' which he completed on site in under two days.
Global sales of his books have topped 45 million and have won numerous prizes and awards; including the Whitbread Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal, the Emil/Kurt Maschler Award and the international Bologna Ragazzi Prize. He won the 2002 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, the highest international recognition given to creators of children's books. In 2004 Quentin Blake was awarded the 'Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres' by the French Government for services to literature and in 2007 he was made Officier in the same order. In 2014 he was admitted to the Legion d'Honneur, an honour accorded to few people who are not French nationals. In 1999 he was appointed the first ever Children's Laureate, a post designed to raise the profile of children's literature, with his book Laureate's Progress (2002) recording many of his activities and the illustrations he produced during his two-year tenure. Quentin Blake was created CBE in 2005, is an RDI (Royal Designer for Industry, of which there are only ever a maximum of 200 at any one time) and has numerous honorary degrees from universities throughout the UK. He received a knighthood for 'services to illustration' in the New Year's Honours for 2013, became an Honorary Freeman of the City of London in 2015, and was appointed 'Companion of Honour' in the Queen's Jubilee Honours List in 2022.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2025Matilda written by Roald Dahl is a story about a gifted five year old girl named Matilda, who lived with terrible parents that didn't know how special their daughter was. Until, one day she goes to school and meets Miss Honey. Miss Honey is a caring teacher who from day one realized just how brilliant Matilda was. There she also meets the horrific headmistress Miss Trunchbull who hates children and treats Miss Honey awful. In the middle of the novel Matilda realized she has powers to defend herself and others too. She uses these powers against the evil principal Miss Trunchbull. The story gets exciting when Matilda finds out Miss Trunchbull had done something really bad to Miss Honey and Matilda decides to get revenge.
I would recommend this book to boys and girls ages six through ten. This book is inspirational and filled with laughter. Children who like fun and heartwarming stories will enjoy this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025Classic story, short chapters, easy to read and the movie follows the book pretty close. I don’t like convoluted writing. I appreciate the symmetry between literature and film because, personally, it’s more enjoyable to read this way. It also makes it easier to pick up on the slight differences and decide which way you prefer the story to be told. I did prefer the movie version of this story but that takes nothing away from the book. Films are sometimes really good at combining details/characters, omitting excessive fluff or just portraying certain events in a more digestible manner to make the story smoother when watching it, but while reading it, it can sometimes be nice to get the extra bits sorted out. Plenty of quotes will transport you right to the scenes in the movie. I love that because it’s more entertaining to visualize the story in a familiar way as I’m reading. Definitely think this book should be read at least once in your life whether you’re reading it as a child or an an adult.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024I have tried to get through Matilda, the movie (the original), and I was not engaged enough to find it interesting. I have yet to view the most recent adaptation, and I do not think I will.
However, the book is superb! I expected nothing less from Roald Dahl and his eccentric ways of introducing characters and tying a reader to this story instantly. One moment, I thought I knew what would take place and the next moment, I was pleasantly surprised.
Matilda is an empathetic, sweet, overly-intelligent, and compact grown-up who catches on quickly. She doesn't seem much like a child at all. And the adults in her life are all soulless, foul human beings--save for Ms. Jenny Honey.
I wanted so badly for Ms. Trunchbull, the Headmistress of Matilda's school, to get her comeuppance, and when she did, I was elated! No child should experience what the children of that school endured by the abusive actions of the vulgar and heartless, Trunchbull.
This is a captivating story of patience, resilience, determination, application of simple powers, and love. And when there's love, there's always a way.
The ending is the cherry on top of the cake. And it brings the story together phenomenally. If you haven't read Matilda, I urge you to do so, and soon.
You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that inspires you to love books. Sounds perfect? It just about is
The several regular readers of my reviews – and now that I have my own blog, I know how many (or few) there are – will know that I recently participated in a challenge to ‘read a book set in another world’. This gave me an opportunity to rediscover the work of Roald Dahl, whose books I adored as a child and which are now being loved by my 8 and 6-year-old nephew and niece all over again.
So when I saw that the next challenge was to ‘read a children’s classic’, there was really only one choice. To re-read what was absolutely my favourite Dahl book of them all: Matilda.
Why? Several reasons. The characters are just – there’s no other word – perfect. Matilda herself, the astonishingly gifted and yet modest child prodigy who had taught herself to read by the time she was three and do long multiplications by the age of five. Matilda’s weaselly parents, her father in particular, who is so self-absorbed in his own (misguided) belief that he is a genius that he fails to even notice the amazing talents of his daughter right under his nose. The formidable headmistress Miss Trunchbull, who, in common with many other Dahl baddies, manages to be terrifying and yet hilarious at the same time. And the wonderful teacher Miss Honey, who is the first adult to appreciate Matilda for who she is and treat her almost as an equal. Even though your own children’s talents are more modest, don’t you want them to have a teacher like that?
Then there’s the storyline. Matilda’s little acts of mischief to get back at adults who have behaved unfairly towards her had my nephew – and probably me at a similar age – rubbing his hands together in glee. (Though if he ever tries any of them on me, I may have to do a Trunchbull myself and throw him out of a window.)
This though, for me, is why Matilda is just so special. It manages like nothing else I’ve read before or since to convey the wonderful power of reading. I remember first reading it at the age of 10 or so and being inspired to read Animal Farm by George Orwell and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. (I think I tried something by Dickens as well, but he proved to be well out of my league. He probably still is.) Dahl’s own critique of CS Lewis, as voiced through the words of a small child, is nothing less than brilliant.
But perhaps most of all, I just love, love, love this quote:
“The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”
Having read it again as an adult, I actually feel a bit disappointed in myself that I haven’t read anything by Hemingway or Kipling. But this just shows how long the written word can continue to inspire. Thanks entirely to Dahl, more than 30 years after his death, I may have to do something about that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super histoire
Roald Dahl est un super auteur. Dans cette histoire, une petite fille surdoué rencontre des difficultés à l’école. Elle va se rendre compte qu’en plus d’être intelligente, elle possède une capacité très singulière. Niveau anglais B1-B2
