“I’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, and maybe one day I will, but for now I’ve this beautiful picture book… a hushed, reverent story… eloquent…with evocative phrasing.” —Julie Danielson, Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast

About the author

I live in New Zealand in a small country village in the South Island, near the city of Dunedin, with my husband. I'm also a mother and grandmother.
I'm a writer who loves the past and what might have happened, hollyhocks and bluebells, coffee, mysteries, home made bread and bohemian earrings.
Besides writing for children, (award winning and over sixty publications) I enjoy writing books for woman, along with the occasional mystery murder.
When I'm not at my computer I'm out in the garden, or walking and scribbling in my head.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021Format: HardcoverLate into the night a father nudges his sleeping son awake. Dad pulls on his son's jacket, woolly hat, and mittens. "We're off to find an Aurora," he said.
The two quietly sneak out on sleeping mom and new baby sister and into the cold freezing night. The stars and moon are suspended high in the sky as father and son ascend to the top of Bracken's Hill. They take a front row seat on the stoney ground and turn their attention upward. The aurora borealis concert begins! Large, colourful dancing lights glow, glimmer and swirl across the pitch black sky. It is such a magical sight that no words are spoken just silent amazement at the spectacular light show that is before them. On the way back home dad is so energized by witnessing this Aurora phenomenon that he cannot stop talking.
This story will delight all ages. The illustrations are colourful and draw you right into the adventure. They are printed on FSC- certified paper with vegetable-based inks.
This book brought back childhood memories for me. When I was little my mom would come into the bedroom and awaken her three little girls and tell us she had something very special to share. She would wrap us in warm quilts and sit us on the backyard clothesline stand. We all huddled together to watch "God's fireworks" perform their magic right before our eyes. Mom always brought a thermos of hot chocolate with her to warm us as we sat mesmerized by this incredible concert. Not only would the colours swish and sway but the aurora made crackling sounds as it danced across the sky.
There is a brief description of an Aurora at the end of the book for those who wish to dig deeper into this fascinating natural event. I love the book and highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021Format: HardcoverThis book is a wonderful way to share the magic of nature with children. The illustrations are amazing and the story has so much love and sharing between the parent and child. Not many of us will be able to experience seeing the incredible Aurora in person but this book makes you feel like you are witnessing the miracle and beauty of what nature has to offer. Books that share the beauty and magic of the natural world are so important in a child's development and appreciation of what nature has to offer.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2021Format: HardcoverThis book is a beautiful exploration of a young boy and his father in search of an Aurora. Poetic imagery accompanied by soft pastel and watercolor illustrations transported me into this quiet adventure. This would be an excellent book for storytime, short and simple in text, with the mystery of the Aurora drawn out until the end. Back matter tells more about the science behind the Aurora and makes for a satisfying end to the little story.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI bought this for my three year old granddaughter and I think we were both disappointed. The illustrations were very good but the story was very, very basic. Perhaps my fault as it seems pitched at the one year old level.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021Format: HardcoverGorgeous art done with pastels and a simple storyline introduce young readers to the aurora winter lights. A brief end section explains the origin of these amazing displays— called the aurora borealis above the North Pole and aurora australis above the South Pole. A treat for children and adults alike!
