The Penultimate Madness.

The Tiffs, KJ, Mac and Erin travel again in time from Y2K to the far future, where they meet a beloved character from the past; Wari, the teenage cavewoman, and his son Jahpo. Grand Father and their goons still following their tracks, trying to kill them before time, and the world, destroys itself.

This volume was possibly the craziest of all. The secret of Grand Father is revealed, and when things finally start making sense, a new plot twist is added that makes a huge mess of things again. Girl power ever present, KJ and Mac trying to find a cure for her fatal disease. The Tiffs and Erin trying to find a way back home before it’s too late. To top everything, a tragic ending, and an amazing cliffhanger that leaves you wondering how the hell this is going to wrap up in just one more last installment.

Unfortunately I’ll never know since I’m quitting this series and never reading the final comic.

Just kidding. Still remaining, one more comic and the TV series (2022)

★★★☆☆ Paper Girls Vol 5
★★☆☆☆ Paper Girls Vol 6

-----------------------------------------------

“This day and age we’re living in
gives cause for apprehension
With speed and apprehension
And things like the Fourth Dimension.”

("As Time Goes By," verse unused in Casablanca, lyrics Herman Hupfield) (just kidding)

In this, the fifth volume, the girls are still in the future, there’s a war on, there’s old-timers. . . and the ultimate question here is about fate, and our potential to change the future, an old time travel issue. A mix of silliness and invention and devastating seriousness, in typical Vaughn/Chiang fashion, but we can see this team knows what it is doing. Time travel tropes abound, in clever fashion.

And you want to know:

How do our girls get back to 1988? (oh, you may find out, you may not. . .)

Who kisses whom in the future? (not telling, you gossip, you snoop!)

“You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.”

"As Time Goes By," lyrics Herman Hupfield

From Casablanca, Ingrid Bergman:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfuRG...

Who dies at some point in the future from this cast of characters? (hey, it’s an open question, really, but . . .)

Who dies in this volume? (Oh, don’t worry, even if I knew anything, I would not be telling! And maybe no one, who knows? Maybe I am just messing with you, and maybe Brian Vaughn is. Time travel complicates this answer. Maybe.)

Who dies at some point in the future? (everybody, duh, trick question!)

As one of the girls says, “No matter what we do, we’re still gonna die. . .”

Who ran for President of the USA in 1988 on the Democratic ticket? (Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen)

Our five(!) heroines are actually now in the Grand Father's timeline!
So here's my overall update-recap... what's great about this series so far:
- 4 main characters are 12 year old paper girls
- extremely diverse throughout, and all of it with a strong feel of being authentic and genuine
-Brian K. Vaughan really captures the distinct tones and styles of language used across the historical and future constructed eras - as well as core cultural references
- very daringly well done plotting of a non-binary romance story arc with child characters put at the fore front of the series!

- like 'Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned' I'm volumes in, and still just getting drip fed information, so that I am as nearly as much in the dark as the Paper Girls, which works really well in keeping my interest
- ...and the writing and plotting is so good, it doesn't let the weak art (in my opinion) impact on the series at all!

In case you haven't worked it out yet, and you will after reading this volume - you are reading another BKV masterclass! 8.5 out of 12.

The series is rounding third and headed home, full bore. the Paper Girls are now in the future searching for a way home while trying to avoid the Time Cops (or whatever they are called here). Vaughan answers lots of our questions and things are falling into place. I'm excited to read the end of this. I feel like this series will benefit greatly from reading it all in one sitting.

2020 re-read:

So here we are. The point at which I realized that it's probably best to read these back to back. To be honest, I'm not sure it got much clearer this time around. In this volume you start to see how events in different timelines influenced (will influence?) each other. Therefore there are some moments when the narrative harks back to events of previous volumes. But showing them from a different perspective, or providing the reader with a clearer understanding for a particular situation. At the same time there are also more questions raised. Because time travel is complicated, and causality can become a problem that is hard to wrap your mind around. While this volume gives the impression that the creators had a clear plan in place, it also can be confusing for the reader who didn't take notes (i.e. me). Nevertheless, it was fun. And the stakes have become quite high for some characters. I'm fully invested. And now I just have to know how this all ends.

2019 review:

Well, it was fun. But to take a break of more than a year from this series was definitely too long.

The girls turn up in the future, and it seems like Vaughan really had a nice plan in place for this series and one by one it is all coming together now. But I couldn't connect all the dots, because too much time had passed for me personally since the last volume.

description

Future Cleveland is a nice setting, and the artwork by Chiang and Wilson is once again fantastic.

description

I will grab the final volume and then do a re-read of the whole thing. That's probably the way this series should be read anyway.

the future is so weird and cool and scary!! but i guess that's true of every point in time.

with this volume it really struck me that each girl is amazingly strong in her own way. and all are clever, caring, and unwaveringly brave.

so many time travel mindfucks going on here.

so much joy seeing 1999 tiffany and 1988 tiffany embrace when they find out there will be black presidents in the future!!

but that joy is countered with the terror of the last few pages of the volume.

More time travel weirdness with the paper girls. This continues to be a great series. In this, the fifth volume, some things are starting to become clearer, but by no means clear.

I have been able to enjoy the books more since we have been able to know what is going on due to the previous volume. It’s so nice to have answers and for the events of the book to make sense. I liked following the plot. I liked the theme of fate and letting be what will be. I was not convinced by how quickly a certain character did a turnaround but okay *shrugs*

*sighs* More of the same in this pen-ultimate volume.

The girls are together and have the other Tiffany with them as well. They landed in 2171 with that robot they highjacked in the last installment.
One half of the group tries to find a cure ofr Mac while the other is visiting Mari (yep, THAT Mari) to find a way to get back to 1988.
Naturally, it's not quite as straight-forward as all that. Cops hunting them. Weirdly coated women trying to sell them stuff. Alzheimer-ridden Mari trying to help. And the other Erin is back too!

Loved the idea of that tree-like computer in the library, though the library itself was weird (the combination didn't make sense).

Sadly, there wasn't much exploration other than meeting Mari and us therefore getting background info. In the end, the same-old same-old thing happened AGAIN. It's obvious by this point that the girls shouldn't split up so it kinda feels as if that story element was getting beaten to death. Over and over again. *sighs*

One more to go, then I'll be done.

3.5 stars. Sadly, this installment was a little less amazing than the others before, and a lot more confusing. Still good enough to make me want to read on, especially as the end is one fantastically teasy cliff hanger.

OBSESIONADAAAAAA.

Erin, Tiff, Mac y Kj❤️‍🩹😭😭😭😭😭

AMO PAPER GIRLS!!!!

This series has proven to be pretty consistent throughout each volume

Not going to lie, this one was pretty confusing. Maybe because I haven't picked up this series in way over a month. But, that being said, it was actually REALLY fun, despite my confusion. I have a feeling that the next volume, the last one, will bring everything full circle and it'll all make sense.

Erin really shone in this volume. She's putting pieces of the puzzle together and has really become a great character.

As always, the visuals are absolutely stunning.

I'm excited to pick up the last volume. Once I finish it, I might want to do a whole binge and re-read the series, just so that I can fully grasp the storyline.

The penultimate volume really got my pulse racing. Love the library shout-outs. I'm so pumped I'm thinking I may reread this series from the start before the final volume (or maybe right after). Hope they stick the landing.

I feel like this is one of those series where it's going to be very good in hindsight once it's finished, but as you are reading it the first time it's just like ...what??? Also I still think it's just the height of laziness that they are 'changing the time stream around them' or whatever and that's why future them don't remember any of this happening. It was nice to get a few more answers though and KJ and whatsherface are getting to be pretty adorable, but I'm just one of those people who likes to know what's going on when I read a book.

Bullet Review:

Once again, I'm playing catch-up and desperately trying to remember what happened last volume(s). Where is this going? Where were we? Is there a philosophy to this time travel or does Vaughan throw up whatever sounds good at the moment?

And then by the end, I've gotten so sucked into the story, I'm like, "Does it matter?"

I have no idea why I let myself go so long without continuing this series, it’s so much fun?! I can’t wait to see where this wild, slightly confusing but highly entertaining story takes this fabulous group of girls in the next volume.

I think I still like this. I mean, I can't say I understand it any more than I have in the past, but it feels like it's still good. Things are certainly still interesting. The art is cool. And I get the sense that the story is on its way to wrapping up at this point, so I'm curious to see where that goes.
