About the author

Officially, I am the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University.
I founded the Center for Advanced Hindsight, wrote a few books, took part in a few media project and startups.
I co-created of the film documentary (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies, and I wrote three-time New York Times bestsellers: Predictably Irrational, The Upside of irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty. I also wrote a few books that did not make it to the New York Times bestsellers list: Irrationally Yours, Payoff, Amazing Decisions and Dollars and Sense.
My new book, MISBELIEF: WHAT MAKES RATIONAL PEOPLE BELIEVE IRRATIONAL THINGS began with my own experience being the target of conspiracy theories, but quickly became about a phenomenon that affects all of us. I will use the term misbelief to describe the phenomenon we’re exploring. Misbelief is a distorted lens through which people begin to view the world, reason about the world, and then describe the world to others.
I derive a lot of satisfaction from seeing my work take shape in the real life and I take part in a few companies / startups. Among them are: Lemonade, Shapa, Irrational Capital, BEWorks, Epilog, Timeful, and Irrational Labs.
I am also part of a team that is working on an NBC TV series that is loosely based on my life and will premiere on NBC in the fall of 2023. The show is called “The Irrational” and officially it is based on my first book, Predictably Irrational.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe moment I started reading this book I didn't put it down until I was done. I loved Dr. Ariely's work so much that I bought his other two books and I will be reading them.
My favorite from the book was the question about diamond ring and parking.
I couldn't stop laughing. Not only the book is super entertaining but I learned a lot and I love how Dr. Dan tackles the questions and his answers are not only witty, smart, intelligent but super funny.
Great book and highly recommended. Super easy to read!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm a big fan of Dan Ariely and have read 4 of his previous books. This book is a collection of his Ask Ariely column for the Wall Street Journal over the past few years. As such, the subject matter is quite varied and each snippet quite short. There are fewer grand lessons or concepts here. It is a great introduction to Ariely's wit and work as a social psychologist so if you are not familiar with his work, I recommend starting with either Predictably Irrational (his first and most famous book) or this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseRead this on a long flight to Seattle. Dan has a way of seeing the non-obvious, explaining it simply and making it interesting. Not a life changing book but I found one page that helped me decide on what car to buy. It's called "signaling". I bet most every reader will find at least one idea that makes a difference in his/her life and for that reason, I have to give it 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a great read for Ariely fans. I wasn't aware he wrote an advice column, and this is a quick compilation of some favorites. It's an excellent read and very well done, but I can't give it five stars for a couple of reasons.
First, there is some really good advice here. For instance, pretending to tell your best friend what to do is one of the best decision making tools I have found, and Ariely points it out in just a few paragraphs. That's great . . . but its interspersed with so-so advice and comedic relief. I think that works well for a column, but its an easy book to read quickly and pass over the good stuff.
Second, I would recommend at least three of his other books before this. In my opinion, this is for Ariely fans but not for very many other people. I would recommend Predictably Irrational before this one to almost anyone.
It's good, it's priced right, it's a quick read in a short paperback - recommended for Ariely fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am partly at fault why i didn't like Dan's book as i have not done sufficient research prior reading it. This is not a book. It's a collection of newspaper articles where Dan answers reader questions. It is one of the many examples of "Dear Dan....". The reader who has read Dan's "predictably irrational" will feel short-changed in this book. While one may yearn for more elaborate reasoning or explanation of one particular situation here in this book you only find a horoscope style quick and dirty answer.
While it is somewhat fun to read these (hence the three stars as opposed to one) it is not the Dan Ariely i was expecting.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseErg frisse aanpak, originele en toch bijzonder herkenbare vragen uit ons alledaagse leven. De adviezen van Dan zijn scherp in hun eenvoud en in hun fijne humor. Een zeer intelligent boek en een absolute aanrader.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fällt aus der Ariely-Reihe
