- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2024Format: PaperbackFor someone who is deeply intrigued by the world of AI, I can tell you that Bill Schmarzo's book is simply magnificent! Ever since I started going through it, I felt as though I were going on a journey; one that was taking me from being just an observer to a "Data Science Citizen" (as the subtitle aptly implies), empowered and with a purpose.
In the book, Schmarzo ingeniously combines theories, practical examples, and insights from real experience. He has an entertaining writing style that makes things that are very complex sound understandable. Even terms like nanoeconomics and customer co-creation made sense. Nevertheless, the book is appealing whether you're a data professional or a beginner; there's enough of a combination of depth and simplicity to satisfy both types of appetite.
Bill doesn't avoid tough questions; rather he poses that we think about the ethical implications of AI. While reading, I had to pause and think if they apply to me and my work as well. The section about the Ethical AI Pyramid was especially enlightening and practical. The book also includes interesting stories, like the one where Schmarzo accitentally trained his AI model to predict the weather based on squirrel behavior.
To sum it up, "AI & Data Literacy" goes beyond just being a book; it serves as a mentor and a trusted companion that can help you get to a future driven by data. So find a cozy reading spot, grab some coffee or hot chocolate, and get ready to dive into an enthralling expedition -- you won't be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2023Format: PaperbackThe book is targeted at "citizens" which should include managers who may over-see AI development or projects. It takes the position that AI can and will do what we ask of it, and therefore it's critical to understand how to design it for good outcomes, and especially how to measure it. The author speaks to the "Citizens of Data Science Mandate"--to wit "Ensuring that everyone, of every age and every background, has access to the education necessary to flourish in an age where economic growth and personal development opportunities are driven by AI and data." This emphasizes that the future will be completely intertwined with AI, so it's beneficial for everyone to know about it.
The work touches on key areas such as data privacy ("we should NOT wait for the government to protect us"), ethics, critical thinking, and understanding unintended consequences. An interesting point of view is the author's proposing to approach AI with an AND mentality vs. an OR mentality. In other words, instead of accepting tradeoffs, ask if can can have AI AND privacy (my example).
There is a large section on Analytics Literacy, walking the reader from operational reporting and basic statistical analysis to Artificial General Intelligence. There are also sections describing some workings of AI systems, followed by discussions of value engineering, ethics of AI adoption, and cultural empowerment.
Notably the book ends with "ChatGPT Changes Everything" with some helpful understandings about how generative AI works and why it is important.
Overall this is a good read and would be excellent for non-technical managers as well as anyone interested in AI and the intersection of these new technologies and societies.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2023Format: PaperbackI review a lot of Packt books, but this one is the best yet.
Why? The subject matter intersects every aspect of our lives and the implications of using AI are far from understood by even professionals in the space.
The authors write the book in a style that is accessible to a non-technical audience, and that's important because (1) most people are non-technical; and (2) technical people such as myself are on the whole not experts in uses and dangers of AI.
"Mysterious coincidences" - like Amazon's sending me an email asking me to buy this book after I post this review - are explained. Turns out anyone who wants to make money has been following you all along in increasingly spooky and invasive ways. You weren't paranoid.
There is a lead-in on ethics, which turns out to be a subject many technologists and a large part of the voting public seem to have missed in school. The foundations of using AI in an ethical manner and the distinctions of it, data science, and business intelligence are defined: this goal is lofty and will remain blurred for the expense of rewarding shareholders, but it is defined.
The quantum shift brought on by ChatGPT and Generative AI (GenAI) is properly identified and explained. The key takeaway (for me) is that what you say and do in almost any context will be parsed and likely used against you in numerous ways. The rest of the technical discussion is a nice-to-have, and does a good job throughout.
To the people and bots "reading" this - this should be something HR has every employee run through. Highly recommend.
