In its fourth edition, Economics Explained continues its announced purpose—to explain that mysterious thing called economics—with a new urgency.

It is announced in the first sentence of the introduction: "Just in case the reader-to-be hasn't noticed, disturbing things are going on in the American economy these days."

This new edition is about these disturbing things: a trend toward inequality of incomes, the appearance of a new "globalized" capitalism, the "specter" of inflation. As before, Robert Heilbroner and Lester Thurow treat these problems in language that seeks to make clear their causes and treatments. In this straightforward, highly accessible reference, Heilbroner and Thurow -- two of America's most respected and articulate economists -- offer all the economics essential for becoming an effective investor, a savvy business decision maker, or simply an informed member of society.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Boston Globe An excellent course in the history of capitalism and socialism, of growth, progress, and decline.

Ms. At last, a patient but not condescending, detailed but not recondite, conversational but not glib discussion of the factors and terms that any reader of the daily newspaper needs to understand.

Robert B. Reich, former Secretary of Labor and author of
Locked in the Cabinet In this delightfully written primer, Heilbroner and Thurow sweep away the debris of economic theory to expose the political and social choices lying just below it.

About the Author

Robert L. Heilbroner was an American economist and historian of economic thought. The author of some 20 books, Heilbroner was best known for The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers, a survey of the lives and contributions of famous economists, notably Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes.

Lester Carl Thurow was a political economist, former dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management, and author of books on economic topics.

Heilbroner and Thurow's book is now somewhat dated. But still useful. Nobody has written such an accessible primer on how capitalist economies work since. Skip the chapters on "current issues", obviously. But the overview of micro, macro and Marx are still great. I pair this with Bowles, et al's "understanding Capitalism" for a freshman course called Economic Ideas.

This book provides a no-nonsense view of the economy. The authors give good, clear analogies where appropriate. A few of the concepts can be a little evasive, requiring a re-read or two, but the vast majority are clear and straightforward. You can tell the authors know what they are talking about, and that they have immense economic experience. The book could be updated with more modern economic data, but it suffices. Gets to the point quickly.

This is an excellent introduction to today's economics. It covers the basics like supply and demand, inflation, savings and investment, but also covers more modern concepts like privatization and the public sector, globalization and money and banking. It touches on a few traditional economic personalities - Smith, Marx and Keynes. It discusses the national debt and deficit spending and all the major things most people are talking about in today's average world. If you know nothing about economics but want to learn, this is the book for you. If you know all about economics but want to review the basics this book is for you. This book even discusses the ethics and morality of our modern day capitalism which I thought was rather refreshing.

This is a classic. I own an earlier edition since the mid-nineties and find it extremely helpful. I bought this particular copy and had it sent as a gift to a friend in Germany. He, too, is very impressed with it.

This review has nothing to do with the actual subject matter or the writing. The book itself looks like it was printed in someone’s garage. The text is faint and blurry.

Beautifully explains concepts such as investments, savings, governments role and other macro concepts in very clear, understandable words. No complicated use of terminology normally associated Economics books. Gives you a good understanding of basic concepts to help you move onto understanding more complicated financial or business concepts(not covered in this book).

I have read a few standard texts. This takes a deeper look at underlying ideas. Well worth the time taken to read it, even if you have good grasp of standard theory.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not inclusive, though thorough in parts.
Reviewed in India on March 16, 2016
I had picked it up for a brief introduction to economics, specially considering the credentials of the author who authored the 'The Wordly Philosophers'. If one intends to get a more updated and inclusive introduction to concepts in day to day economics, I would recommend Ha-Joon Chang's book is much better to go for.
