11 books84 followers (Tamil: திருவள்ளுவர்) is a celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher whose contribution to Tamil literature is the Thirukkural, a work on ethics. As with most other details about Valluvar, the exact place of his birth remains uncertain. Thiruvalluvar is thought to have lived sometime between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century BC.
The Tamil poet Mamulanar of the Sangam period mentioned that Thiruvalluvar was the greatest Tamil scholar and Mamulanar also mentioned the Nanda Dynasty of northern which ruled until the 4th century BC. This estimate is based on linguistic analysis of his writings, as there is no archaeological evidence for when he lived. He is sometimes also called Theiva Pulavar ("Divine Poet"), Valluvar, Poyyamozhi Pulavar, Senna Pothar,Gnana Vettiyan or Ayyan.

"One work that has been almost like a code for living for me is the Thirukkural."
This is a sentence from one of my favorite books written by one of my favorite authors, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Kalam is also my favorite role model. The next thing the younger version of me did after reading this sentence was to persuade my father to take me to a book exhibition to buy Thirukkural. I couldn't miss the opportunity to read the favorite book of my favorite role model. This book has been having an extraordinary impact on my life from that day onwards.

Tamil is an official Dravidian language of the Indian state, Tamil Nadu, with a lot of tradition and history. Thirukkural is considered one of the best books published in Tamil literature. It has been dated from 300 BCE to the 5th Century CE, probably in the Post-Sangam era. (Please consider the time it was written while reading this book (especially in case of couplets discussing marital life and love) to understand it more deeply)
This book, containing 1,330 short couplets, has been widely admired by scholars and influential leaders around the world. There is an extraordinary amount of wisdom in it, which touches almost all spheres of life. It will help you to learn more about the beautiful traditions followed by Tamil people.

The greatness of those, who have known both worlds but have eschewed desire to live a simple life, is admirable.
The greatness of those, who have known both worlds but have chosen to live a righteous life, makes this world meaningful.

One who earns well but avoids the blame of hoarding wealth, by philanthropy, will lead a complete life with no complaints.

I like paging through this...it's a set of couplets divided into the categories of virtue, wealth, and love. For example:
To resist hatred is a gain,
To yield to it ruin.
I'm surprised this isn't more well known, I guess it's huge in India. I stumbled upon the book and pull it off the shelf every now and then. Not life-changing but thought provoking.

तिरुवल्लुवर तमिल भाषा के एक महान संत कवि हैं। मैंने बचपन से बहुत से स्थानों पर भारत के महान व्यक्तित्वों में इनका नाम पढ़ा है। स्वामी विवेकानंद केंद्र, कन्याकुमारी में इनकी प्रतिमा भी देखी थी। इनकी सुप्रसिद्ध रचना तिरुकुरल का पाठ भारतीय संसद में भी हुआ है। [0] लेकिन इनकी प्रसिद्धता का कारण और इनके जीवन दर्शन का कभी अध्ययन नहीं किया। अब इनकी कृति तिरुकुरल का हिंदी अनुवाद पढ़ने के बाद का अनुभव यहाँ लिख रहा हूँ जिससे अन्य जन भी इन महान संत को तथा उनके शाश्वत विचारों को जानें।
कौन थे तिरुवल्लुवर?
तिरुवल्लुवर एक तमिल कवि थे जिनका जन्म स्थान चेन्नई के पास का माना जाता है। इनके जन्म के समय के विषय में विद्वानों में मतभेद है, जैसा कि अन्य प्राचीन भारतीय रचनाकारों के विषय में भी है। इनका जीवन काल 200 BCE – 500 CE के मध्य का माना गया है। तिरुवल्लुवर की रचनाओं ने सहस्राब्दियों से सामाजिक, राजनीतिक, धार्मिक, दार्शनिक, अध्यात्मिक, आदि विषयों के विद्वानों को प्रभावित किया है। अनेक विशेषज्ञों ने इनके प्रभाव को स्वीकारा है, जैसे- जॉर्ज उगलो पोप ने इन्हें दक्षिण भारत का सर्वोत्तम कवि माना है। मैंने अपने अध्ययन में इनका कवित्व और चिंतन की गहराई स्पष्ट देखे हैं।
मुख्य कृति तिरुकुरल के अलावा इन्होंने भजन, कविताएँ, आदि भी लिखे हैं। अपने आस-पास की सामाजिक परिस्थितियों के गहरे निरीक्षण और गहन चिंतन से जो जीवन आदर्श इन्होंने विकसित किया वो तिरुकुरल में व्यक्त किया है। जिसमें 3 भाग हैं- सद्गुण (धर्म), सांसारिकता (अर्थ), प्रेम (काम)। ये तीन भाग चार पुरुषार्थों, यानि धर्म, अर्थ, काम, एवं मोक्ष, से मेल खाते हैं। मुझे इस पुस्तक को पढ़ते हुए बार-बार भृतहरि (भरथरी) की तीन रचनाओं (नीतिशतक, श्रृंगारशतक, वैराग्यशतक) का स्मरण हो रहा था। जिसका कारण संभवतः दोनों लेखकों के व्यवहारिक उपदेश हैं। हालांकि दोनों ही के जीवन काल अस्पष्ट हैं, तिरुवल्लुवर संभवत पहले हुए हैं। तो संभव है कि तिरुवल्लुवर के दर्शन का प्रभाव सिर्फ दक्षिण भारत तक ही सीमित नहीं था, अपितु पूरे भारतवर्ष में था। हालांकि, उन दोनों की गूढ़ बातें मानव व्यवहार के गहरे अध्ययन द्वारा स्वतंत्र रूप से भी लिखी जा सकती हैं।
यदि आज 1500 वर्षों बाद भी लोग तिरुकुरल को बहुत रूचि से पढ़ते हैं और उनकी सीखों से प्रभावित होते हैं, तो वह वेदों, भगवद्गीता, आदि की तरह ही उनके मानव जाति के प्रति शाश्वत सन्देश होने का द्योतक है। जिसमें काव्य रस तो हैं ही, आज के जीवन के लिए सीखें भी हैं।
“तिरुकुरल”
तमिल में तिरु का अर्थ ”दिव्य” और कुरल का अर्थ “छोटा” होता है। अर्थात् कवि ने लघुतम छंदों में गूढ़तम बातें कही हैं। जैसे हिंदी साहित्य में दोहा, सोरठा आदि छंद रूप होते हैं, वैसे ही कुरल तमिल भाषा का एक छंद रूप है, जिसमें पहली पंक्ति में 4 चरण और दूसरी पंक्ति में 3 चरण (शब्द) होते हैं। [तमिल भाषा में गायन] पूरी पुस्तक में 133 अध्याय हैं। हर अध्याय में एक विषय, जैसे – सच्ची मित्रता, सम्बंधित १० कुरल हैं। पहले भाग ‘सद्गुण’ में 380, दुसरे भाग ‘अर्थ’ में 700, एवं तीसरे भाग ‘प्रेम’ में 250 कुरल हैं। कुरलों की संख्या (संभवतः) उस भाग की दूसरे भागों की तुलना में महत्वपूर्णता और भागों का क्रम धर्म का सर्वोच्च स्थान दर्शाती है। [1] अधिक जानकारी के लिए Goodreads पर पुस्तक विवरण पढ़ें।
गौर करने वाली बात यह है कि एक ही लेखक ने ऊपर से बहुत भिन्न दिखने वाले विषयों का इतना गहन अध्ययन किया है। सामान्यतः हमें एक विषय पर गहराई से लिखने वाले लेखक ही मिलते हैं। किन्तु ये तीनों विषय ही मानव जीवन में सर्वांगीण सुख के लिए महत्वपूर्ण हैं, अतः तीनों पर ही एक साथ विचार करना आवश्यक है, जो तिरुवल्लुवर जी ने बहुत ही उचित रूप से किया है। मैं नीचे हर भाग का संक्षित वर्णन और कुछ उद्धरण दे रहा हूँ। आशा है ये आपको पुस्तक पढ़ने हेतु प्रोत्साहित करेंगे।
भाग 1. सद्गुण (धर्म)
विषय: अतिथि सत्कार, विनम्रता, न्यायशीलता, अनुशासन, लोभहीनता, दान, तप, धूर्तता, सत्यता, अहिंसा, सत्य का अनुभव, संसार की अनित्यता, आदि। थिरुकुरल जी द्वारा वर्णित सद्गुण, संस्कृत के लोकप्रिय सुभाषितों, पुराणों, लोक कथाओं, पंचतंत्र, आदि में वर्णित वांछनीय गुणों से मेल खाते हैं, अधिकतर जगह तो शब्दों का चयन भी समान ही हैं।
भाग 2. सांसारिकता (अर्थ)
विषय: बुद्धिमत्ता, कुसंग से दूर रहना, (शत्रु से सामने के लिए) अपनी शक्ति, उचित स्थान और समय का निर्धारण, सुप्रशासन, विचारशीलता, गुप्तचर, पुरुषार्थ, मंत्री-मंडल, वाक-पटुता, मित्रता की घनिष्ठता और लक्षण, महान व्यक्तियों का आदर, औषधि, वेश्यावृति से परहेज़, योग्यता, सभ्यता, खेती, भिक्षाटन, आदि। अधिकतर शिक्षाएं, पंचतंत्र की कथाओं, चाणक्य के सूत्रों और भृतहरि के नीतिशतक के सुभाषितों से मेल खाती हैं।
भाग 3. प्रेम (काम)
विषय: प्रेम के लक्षण, प्रेमियों के संयोग का सुख, वियोग से होनी वाली पीड़ा और शारीर का क्षीण होना, वियोग के दौरान समाज के ताने और प्रेमी के स्वपन देखना, पुनः मिलने की आकांशा, उलाहने देने का आनंद, आदि। कुरल पति और पत्नी दोनों के दृष्टिकोण से लिखे गए हैं और भावों का बहुत सुन्दर चित्रण किया है।

1. धर्म
आगत अतिथियों का जो घर में सम्मान करते हैं, उनके घर सुख एवं समृद्धि से सदैव भरे रहते हैं। [कुरल संख्या 84]
यदि आपको बोलना ही है तो सार्थक शब्दों का चयन कीजिए अन्यथा अच्छा यही है कि यदि प्रिय नहीं है तो मत बोलिए। [200]
क्रोध हानिकारक है चाहे उस प्रयोग शक्तिशाली के विरुद्ध हो अथवा कमजोर के प्रति। [302]
जिस आचरण से होत है, अपने को कोई कष्ट।
उस व्यवहार के भाव को, मन से निकाल करो नष्ट।। [316]
जीवों के प्रति दयाभाव रखते हुए उन्हें संरक्षण प्रदान करना मानव का प्राथमिक गुण है जिसकी प्रशंसा वेदों में भी की गई है। [322]

2. अर्थ
सभी भू-भाग एवं स्थान, विद्वान् से परिचित स्थल होते हैं, वह कहीं भी जा सकता है तो ज्ञान को तिरस्कृत कर समय नष्ट करना आखिर क्यों? [397]
जब कानों के विश्राम का समय होता है तो पेट पूजा की जाती है कि हम उपयोगी उपदेश के लिए उत्तम चेतना में जीवित रह सकें। जब कानों के लिए भोजन न होगा, तब पेट के लिए भोजन दिया जाएगा। [412]
विघनों को सोचे प्रथम, फिर तौले निज शक्ति।
देखें पक्ष विपक्ष का बल, कार्य करे फिर व्यक्ति।। [471]
ऐसे लोगों का चयन कीजिए जिन्हें बुद्धिमत्ता, प्रेम, निर्णायक शक्ति, लालसा से मुक्ति, भावनाओं से निर्मल दृष्टिकोण की क्षमता प्राप्त हो। जिसमें दया, बुद्धि, तत्काल निर्णय की क्षमता है तथा वह लालच से परे है उसे ही चुनिए। [513]
ऐसा शासक जिसके लिए आलस्य एक अजनबी गुण है, समस्त दूरियों को अपने में समाहित करते हुए संघर्ष करता है और आगे बढ़ता है। जिस राजा ने आलस्य को सर्वथा त्याग दिया तो वह एक दिन त्रि-विक्रम से नापी हुई विशाल धरती को अपने अधिकार में ले लेगा। [610]
विजय प्राप्त करने हेतु प्रार्थना कीजिए चाहे भले ही युद्ध करते करते नष्ट हो जाइए, ऐसी स्थिति में आपको कोई दोषी नहीं कहेगा बल्कि युद्धस्थल पर प्रदर्शित वीरता को सभी नमन करेंगे। [779]

प्रियतमा के आलिंगन के हाथों के सुख के अलावा जीवन में क्या कोई अन्य शुभ दिन होता है, उसके कमल नयन के धाम के सुख से क्या अधिक रमणीय कोई सुख होगा? [1103]
आलिंगन ऐसा हुआ, सब कुछ ऐसा खोय।
प्रिय प्रियतमा हैं चाहते, कुछ बाधा न होय।। [1108]
जिस प्रकार से पृथ्वी की छाया चन्द्रमा में ग्रहण का कारण बनती है उसी प्रकार हमारा मिलना भले ही कभी कभार हो लेकिन अफवाहें बड़ी तीव्रता के साथ दूर दूर तक फैलती हैं। [1146]
उस पुर में रहना दुखद, जहाँ न प्रियतम होय।

यदि आज 1500 वर्षों बाद भी लोग तिरुकुरल को बहुत रूचि से पढ़ते हैं और उनकी सीखों से प्रभावित होते हैं, तो वह वेदों, भगवद्गीता, आदि की तरह ही उनके मानव जाति के प्रति शाश्वत सन्देश होने का द्योतक है। जिसमें काव्य रस तो हैं ही, आज के जीवन के लिए सीखें भी हैं।
“तिरुकुरल”
तमिल में तिरु का अर्थ ”दिव्य” और कुरल का अर्थ “छोटा” होता है। अर्थात् कवि ने लघुतम छंदों में गूढ़तम बातें कही हैं। जैसे हिंदी साहित्य में दोहा, सोरठा आदि छंद रूप होते हैं, वैसे ही कुरल तमिल भाषा का एक छंद रूप है, जिसमें पहली पंक्ति में 4 चरण और दूसरी पंक्ति में 3 चरण (शब्द) होते हैं। [तमिल भाषा में गायन] पूरी पुस्तक में 133 अध्याय हैं। हर अध्याय में एक विषय, जैसे – सच्ची मित्रता, सम्बंधित १० कुरल हैं। पहले भाग ‘सद्गुण’ में 380, दुसरे भाग ‘अर्थ’ में 700, एवं तीसरे भाग ‘प्रेम’ में 250 कुरल हैं। कुरलों की संख्या (संभवतः) उस भाग की दूसरे भागों की तुलना में महत्वपूर्णता और भागों का क्रम धर्म का सर्वोच्च स्थान दर्शाती है। [1] अधिक जानकारी के लिए Goodreads पर पुस्तक विवरण पढ़ें।
गौर करने वाली बात यह है कि एक ही लेखक ने ऊपर से बहुत भिन्न दिखने वाले विषयों का इतना गहन अध्ययन किया है। सामान्यतः हमें एक विषय पर गहराई से लिखने वाले लेखक ही मिलते हैं। किन्तु ये तीनों विषय ही मानव जीवन में सर्वांगीण सुख के लिए महत्वपूर्ण हैं, अतः तीनों पर ही एक साथ विचार करना आवश्यक है, जो तिरुवल्लुवर जी ने बहुत ही उचित रूप से किया है। मैं नीचे हर भाग का संक्षित वर्णन और कुछ उद्धरण दे रहा हूँ। आशा है ये आपको पुस्तक पढ़ने हेतु प्रोत्साहित करेंगे।
भाग 1. सद्गुण (धर्म)
विषय: अतिथि सत्कार, विनम्रता, न्यायशीलता, अनुशासन, लोभहीनता, दान, तप, धूर्तता, सत्यता, अहिंसा, सत्य का अनुभव, संसार की अनित्यता, आदि। थिरुकुरल जी द्वारा वर्णित सद्गुण, संस्कृत के लोकप्रिय सुभाषितों, पुराणों, लोक कथाओं, पंचतंत्र, आदि में वर्णित वांछनीय गुणों से मेल खाते हैं, अधिकतर जगह तो शब्दों का चयन भी समान ही हैं।
भाग 2. सांसारिकता (अर्थ)
विषय: बुद्धिमत्ता, कुसंग से दूर रहना, (शत्रु से सामने के लिए) अपनी शक्ति, उचित स्थान और समय का निर्धारण, सुप्रशासन, विचारशीलता, गुप्तचर, पुरुषार्थ, मंत्री-मंडल, वाक-पटुता, मित्रता की घनिष्ठता और लक्षण, महान व्यक्तियों का आदर, औषधि, वेश्यावृति से परहेज़, योग्यता, सभ्यता, खेती, भिक्षाटन, आदि। अधिकतर शिक्षाएं, पंचतंत्र की कथाओं, चाणक्य के सूत्रों और भृतहरि के नीतिशतक के सुभाषितों से मेल खाती हैं।
भाग 3. प्रेम (काम)
विषय: प्रेम के लक्षण, प्रेमियों के संयोग का सुख, वियोग से होनी वाली पीड़ा और शारीर का क्षीण होना, वियोग के दौरान समाज के ताने और प्रेमी के स्वपन देखना, पुनः मिलने की आकांशा, उलाहने देने का आनंद, आदि। कुरल पति और पत्नी दोनों के दृष्टिकोण से लिखे गए हैं और भावों का बहुत सुन्दर चित्रण किया है।

आगत अतिथियों का जो घर में सम्मान करते हैं, उनके घर सुख एवं समृद्धि से सदैव भरे रहते हैं। [कुरल संख्या 84]
यदि आपको बोलना ही है तो सार्थक शब्दों का चयन कीजिए अन्यथा अच्छा यही है कि यदि प्रिय नहीं है तो मत बोलिए। [200]
क्रोध हानिकारक है चाहे उस प्रयोग शक्तिशाली के विरुद्ध हो अथवा कमजोर के प्रति। [302]
जिस आचरण से होत है, अपने को कोई कष्ट।
उस व्यवहार के भाव को, मन से निकाल करो नष्ट।। [316]
जीवों के प्रति दयाभाव रखते हुए उन्हें संरक्षण प्रदान करना मानव का प्राथमिक गुण है जिसकी प्रशंसा वेदों में भी की गई है। [322]

2. अर्थ
सभी भू-भाग एवं स्थान, विद्वान् से परिचित स्थल होते हैं, वह कहीं भी जा सकता है तो ज्ञान को तिरस्कृत कर समय नष्ट करना आखिर क्यों? [397]
जब कानों के विश्राम का समय होता है तो पेट पूजा की जाती है कि हम उपयोगी उपदेश के लिए उत्तम चेतना में जीवित रह सकें। जब कानों के लिए भोजन न होगा, तब पेट के लिए भोजन दिया जाएगा। [412]
विघनों को सोचे प्रथम, फिर तौले निज शक्ति।
देखें पक्ष विपक्ष का बल, कार्य करे फिर व्यक्ति।। [471]
ऐसे लोगों का चयन कीजिए जिन्हें बुद्धिमत्ता, प्रेम, निर्णायक शक्ति, लालसा से मुक्ति, भावनाओं से निर्मल दृष्टिकोण की क्षमता प्राप्त हो। जिसमें दया, बुद्धि, तत्काल निर्णय की क्षमता है तथा वह लालच से परे है उसे ही चुनिए। [513]
ऐसा शासक जिसके लिए आलस्य एक अजनबी गुण है, समस्त दूरियों को अपने में समाहित करते हुए संघर्ष करता है और आगे बढ़ता है। जिस राजा ने आलस्य को सर्वथा त्याग दिया तो वह एक दिन त्रि-विक्रम से नापी हुई विशाल धरती को अपने अधिकार में ले लेगा। [610]
विजय प्राप्त करने हेतु प्रार्थना कीजिए चाहे भले ही युद्ध करते करते नष्ट हो जाइए, ऐसी स्थिति में आपको कोई दोषी नहीं कहेगा बल्कि युद्धस्थल पर प्रदर्शित वीरता को सभी नमन करेंगे। [779]

प्रियतमा के आलिंगन के हाथों के सुख के अलावा जीवन में क्या कोई अन्य शुभ दिन होता है, उसके कमल नयन के धाम के सुख से क्या अधिक रमणीय कोई सुख होगा? [1103]
आलिंगन ऐसा हुआ, सब कुछ ऐसा खोय।
प्रिय प्रियतमा हैं चाहते, कुछ बाधा न होय।। [1108]
जिस प्रकार से पृथ्वी की छाया चन्द्रमा में ग्रहण का कारण बनती है उसी प्रकार हमारा मिलना भले ही कभी कभार हो लेकिन अफवाहें बड़ी तीव्रता के साथ दूर दूर तक फैलती हैं। [1146]

The Kural is a celebrated work by the greatest poet of classical Tamil literature Thiruvalluvar. He probably lived and wrote between the second century BC and the eighth century AD though his dates have not been conclusively established. This English edition has been translated and edited with an introduction by P.S. Sundaram, professor of English at the Madras University and Oxford.

Thirukkural, is a two line proverbial genius, the Greatest revolutionary writing ever to occur on this planet, This ancient south Indian Saint Thiruvalluvar wrote several books about Life, and it is one of a kind of writing putting everything you can say about a particular subject in just two line phrases, proverbs or quotes to simplify the style.

This is a collection of Tamel verses (1,330 couplets) written at some point between 300 BCE and 300 CE by, the introduction indicates, some unknown author with an unknown title, and it is divided into three books (Being Good, Politics, and Love). The first (or best) Western translation was by Pope who landed in India in 1839. The translation of this edition takes Pope’s Victorian English and turns it into the “English of our globalized times.”
I got through most of Book One and finally gave up for a couple of reasons. The thinking is premised on an infinite, universal presence and our job as followers or readers is to let go of this earthly life and merge with it. There’s no redemption unless you attain God’s grace one of the verses says. If you don’t have it, you “are a mindless clod.” True knowledge is to give up desire. Desire gives pain. One must renunciate to escape from life’s strife. Conquer the senses and follow “the other world’s laws” “Birth is a mistake….Death but a nap, says the old wisdom, but birth is a break in the soul’s freedom.” “The soul is a wanderer, a wanderer is she. But she sits in the body, just waiting to flee.” If one is a believer in a higher reality, this verse would appeal. But I found it, as Schweitzer might have said, filled with “world and life negation.” The rhyming I thought was often forced, as if finding a rhyming word was more important that the thought conveyed.

Good Insight about Tiruvalluvar and Tirukural
There are many translations of Tirukural. What makes this translation by Mr. Gandhi distinct is the amount of research the author has done about the History of Tirukural. Not many books explains the History of Kural. Mr. Gandhi has also presented a Bird's Eye View of Tirukural and Tiruvalluvar analysing character of Tiruvalluvar himself based on the the Morals put forward by Valluvar. Mr. Gandhi has made a good attempt to portray the Living Style of Tiruvalluvar's Era. A Must read Book for all Tamilians. Even the Tamil School Text Books do not give such a beautiful insight about Tirukural.

The Thirukkural itself is beautiful and worth 5 stars, but I really regret I read this edition, for the translation is very bad and sometimes even incomprehensible. I'd suggest you try with other editions.

The English translation isn’t done well enough as it misses out being poetic and often sounds more like disjointed maxims that nuggets of poetic wisdom. Google found better free translation of the Kural, which I plan to read instead.
The rest of this book (two-thirds), is trying too hard to act as a Bible for the Tamil diaspora. The binding and look, reminds one of a Bible in a motel. Oddly instead of embracing the value of Hinduism being a multi text, multi god, multi perspective religion with many view points and paths towards spirituality, it favors to focus on the Thirukural as the only way of life for a Tamil person. It feels like this book exists for the sole reason of competing with Christianity in a Western world. To show some on that Tamils also have a revered book.
Although done with definitely a good intent, the book misses its mark. I’m unable to comment on the text written in Tamil, but the English translated sections, could do with a better translation. Some wordings are so clunky and the insertion of a comic book to tell the story of the writer Thiruvallar, started out as interesting (being a comic book fan) but the disjointed story telling, made it a sore to read.
Better find a nicer translation of the Thirukural in English. There’s been a few version over the years.

Although two section, Aram and Inbam are devoted to private life of an individual more than half the couplets in Thirukural are grouped under Porul which discusses ethics in public life. Thus Thiruvalluvar gives more importance to righteous living in public life.
The Kural has been translated into most languages, likely next only to the Bible, Qur'an and Gita. The Latin translation of Thirukkural made by Constanzo Beschi in 1730 helped significantly to make known to European intellectuals the richness and beauty of Tamil literature.

තිරුක්කුරල් එහි විශ්වීය ප්රඥාව සහ සදාචාරාත්මක ඉගැන්වීම් සඳහා ඉතා ඉහළින් සලකනු ලබන අතර එය කාලය සහ සංස්කෘතික සීමාවන් ඉක්මවා යයි. එය ලොව පුරා විද්වතුන්, දාර්ශනිකයන් සහ පාඨකයින් විසින් පුළුල් ලෙස අධ්යයනය කර අගය කරනු ලැබේ. මෙම කෘතිය භාෂා කිහිපයකට පරිවර්තනය කර ඇති අතර, එහි ගැඹුරු අවබෝධය දෙමළ කතා කරන ප්රදේශවලින් ඔබ්බට පුළුල් ප්රේක්ෂක පිරිසකට ප්රවේශ විය හැකිය.
තිරුවල්ලුවර් විසින් රචනා කරන ලද දෙමළ සාහිත්යයේ ස්මාරක කෘතියක් වන තිරුක්කුරල් මානව පැවැත්මේ සංකීර්ණතා පිළිබඳ ගැඹුරු අවබෝධයක් ලබා දෙන අතර ධර්මිෂ්ඨ හා සදාචාරාත්මක ජීවිතයක් ගත කිරීම සඳහා පුළුල් මාර්ගෝපදේශයක් සපයයි. එහි කාලානුරූපී ප්රඥාව සහ විශ්වීය වටිනාකම් දෙමළ සංස්කෘතිය තුළ පමණක් නොව දාර්ශනික හා සදාචාරාත්මක ඉගැන්වීම්වල පුළුල් ක්ෂේත්රය තුළ ද එය ගෞරවනීය තත්ත්වයක් උපයා ඇත.
තිරුක්කුරල් හි ශක්තිය පවතින්නේ එහි සංක්ෂිප්ත හා කාව්ය ශෛලිය තුළ වන අතර එය ගැඹුරු සත්යයන් වචන කිහිපයකින් සංග්රහ කරයි. සෑම යුගලයක්ම, වචන හතකින් ඉතා සූක්ෂම ලෙස සකස් කර ඇති අතර, අර්ථ සම්භාරයක් රැගෙන මෙනෙහි කිරීමට ආරාධනා කරයි. මෙම කෙටිකතාව කෘතියේ ප්රවේශ්යතාවයට එක් කරන අතර එය මතක තබා ගත හැකි කරයි, එහි ඉගැන්වීම් පරම්පරා ගණනාවක් පුරා පාඨකයන් සමඟ අනුනාද වීමට ඉඩ සලසයි.
තිරුක්කුරල් හි එක් සුවිශේෂී ලක්ෂණයක් වන්නේ මිනිස් ජීවිතයේ විවිධ පැතිකඩයන් එහි පුළුල් ලෙස ආවරණය කිරීමයි. එය ගුණවත්කම, ධනය, ආදරය, පාලන��, මිත්රත්වය, පවුල් ජීවිතය සහ අධ්යාත්මය වැනි පුළුල් පරාසයක මාතෘකා ආවරණය කරයි. එවැනි පුළුල් තේමා මාලාවක් ආමන්ත්රණය කිරීමෙන්, තිරුවල්ලුවර් පුද්ගලික හැසිරීමේ සිට සමාජ වගකීම් දක්වා ජීවිතයේ විවිධ ක්ෂේත්රවල පුද්ගලයින්ට මග පෙන්වීම සපයයි. තිරුක්කුරල් හි ආචාර ධර්ම ඉගැන්වීම් මුල් බැස ඇත්තේ ධර්ම සංකල්පය තුළ ය.

The Kural is a book of wisdom in the form of poetic couplets, written by Tiruvalluvar around 1500 years ago in India. These couplets are divided into dharma (virtue), artha (wealth), and kama (love) - three of the four supreme aims of the Hindu tradition. These couplets are, simply put, fantastic. While the rendering into English inevitably causes them to lose much of their poetic form, the insights and juxtaposition of the couplets is often strikingly insightful nonetheless. This book is easy to read, maybe even more impactful, in short doses. One can read a few couplets, and then let them marinate for awhile. Most still apply to today.

The Kindle edition is incomplete. Many definitions to each verse are missing. But the concise definitions by Dr.Mu.Varadarasanar and detailed definitions by Parimelazhagar well serve the purpose. As for Thirukkural, it is உலக பொதுமறை and needs no review or comment.
