From the author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Barking Up the Wrong Tree comes a cure-all for our increasing emotional distance and loneliness--a smart, surprising, and thoroughly entertaining guide to help build better friendships, reignite love, and get closer to others, whether you're an extrovert or introvert, socially adept or socially anxious.

Can you judge a book by its cover?

Is a friend in need truly a friend indeed?

Does love conquer all?

Is no man an island?

In Plays Well With Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a twenty-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.

Leveraging the best evidence available--free of platitudes or magical thinking--Barker analyzes multiple sides of an issue before rendering his verdict. What he's uncovered is surprising, counterintuitive, and timely--and will change the way you interact in the world and with those around you just when you need it most.

Don't Read This Book—Enphagorate It
Well-structured amusing stories that gradually lead into more and more stories. Despite being thick with science, there is little stink to all this science, and that is Barker at his best. The slick segues to scientific studies establishes authority the author uses to make unarguable points about the state of social relations. I cried manly tears at the end as the author related he needed to write the book more to feel he belonged to something more than himself. Each chapter builds on the points of the last, outdoing Barker's usual enlightening email essays, trending towards grand points that felt almost-too-obvious, painfully so, by the time I read the end of the chapter. I own two physical books: Stillness is the Key and now this. I regret that that this book has pages and weight, but the typography and size make it quite the easy reading experience that gels with Barker's digestible writing. By buying this, you're not buying science, though the science is all there. You're buying story, an organization of the already-present world that gives you a roadmap for engaging in constructive, healthy, and satisfying relationships with your tribe and world.

Eric Barker does it again with another great book you must read. The biggest determiner of your happiness is the relationships we have and the crap society teaches about relationships generally sucks sperm whale. It is not your fault you don't get along with your neighbors.

Barker starts out by pointing out how friendship is critical to happiness yet we don't generally honor friendship much in our western society. Barker helps fix this by pointing out how to have better friendship without being slimy like Dale Carnegie.

Next topic was dealing with jerks. More specifically sub-clinical narcissists. Basically, narcissists have a hard time having empathy for anyone so you have to stroke them just right. Appeal to narcissists sense of similarity, be vulnerable to the narcissist, and I can't remember the last one. (Hint: buy the book.) Being a lawyer, I am thinking of tattooing this list on my arm so I don't forget it.

Lastly, Barker goes into saving marriages and relies on the work of Gottman in a huge way. Gottman wrote the book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Marriages" based on 50 years of research on the causes of divorce. See my Amazon review on the Seven Habits book. (Note: worst title for a book goes to Gottman's publishers.) I read Gotman's book while in law school after seeing the catastrophic legal implications divorce has on your life, i.e. it will mess you up for the rest of your life in a big way. Free legal advice; avoid divorce by any means possible like by having a background check done. (I was accused in law school of being Captain Obvious.) Gottman has done a lot more research and written a bunch more books which Barker summarizes. So you can read a dozen Gottman books or just read Barker for the highlights.

This is one of the few books that I have preordered. I waited patiently for the release date. Eric Barker is one of my favorite authors and speakers. He has a good blend of humor, facts, and stories. With as much science that is packed into this book, it is a very easy read.
In this book, Eric tackles 4 common sayings, that we hear in day to day conversations all the time. Can you “Judge a book by its cover?”, Is “A Friend in Need a Friend Indeed?”, Does “Love Conque All?”, and Is “No Man an Island?”
What if those four statements do nothing for your interest? Read the book anyways! Eric’s approach to tackling these statements provides the reader with more information that you would think (Don’t judge the content by the cover).
Each statement has its own section. In the sections, Eric provides anecdotal and scientific evidence as he navigates through each statement. He is meticulous in his research and I love the fact that there is so much evidence backing his statements. Eric is not just another well spoken speaker/writer that gives his opinion. He backs it up with science.
I’m not going to spoil the fun of reading this book by giving you his conclusions on the validity of each of the statements, but I guarantee that you will not be disappointed by taking the time to read the book.

Since I don't always "play well with others," (yes, I can, but it's more on the lines of if I choose to) I thought this book might be the book to pick up and check out it's content for some guideposts to help me navigate playing better with others in all aspects of my life. Interesting read, that diverges into many topics and situations....oh, and the science of it. Eric had me cracking up with his sarcastic sense of humor! Definitely, worth taking a read through.

It's finally here! Eric Barker is the writer I love to turn to when I'm looking for secrets to life success. There are so many people giving advice based on thin anecdotes and intuition, but Eric digs out ideas and answers in giant tomes of research and verifiable studies. In one part of Plays Well with Others, Eric reveals the ways people either connect with or misjudge new acquaintances — and he does it by using REAL studies that shred stuff like bogus criminal profiling tactics and personality testing. In another part, Eric breaks down the science of renewing love in your relationships by studying surprising lessons learned from a real person with a rare form of amnesia. It's totally fascinating. Eric’s stories are always indelible and I’m constantly retelling them to others — and I’m super excited that now I have a whole new book full of stories to retell.

If you get his email newsletter (if not, why not?!) then you already know he has a hilarious way of sneaking you the answers to life’s confounding problems. The pleasure of Plays Well with Others is that the stories all connect to the topic of relationships — friends, family, love life. If you want to know how our brains really work for, and often against, our relationships then I think this book is a must read.

This book really spoke to me. It affirmed what I’ve suspected for a while now. I tell people it’s not what you have but how you treat others that matters. That’s what you are remembered for.

If you’re feeling a little lost, at a crossroads, sad or frustrated, then I recommend reading this book. Eric is a great story/fact teller. It’s engaging and funny while delivering in the promise to answer your questions (even the ones you didn’t know you needed to ask).

This is definitely a book for the modern age, an era of individualism, depression and loneliness. It's not me saying that, it's been shown extensively by research. Eric Barker, whose blog I greatly enjoy, took advantage of the pandemic to get his teeth into the subject of relationships and their importance in our lives.
He writes engagingly using stories about real people in real situations, and humour to illustrate the science. It's a fascinating read examining friendship, love, community, appearances and the answer to the meaning of life. No spoiler alerts here...!
It's thoroughly researched - check out the 45 pages of references at the end, excellently written and a jolly good read.
