Pixel Logic - A Guide to Pixel Art
Pixel Logic is an in-depth pixel art tutorial book currently at 242 pages!
This book focuses on VISUAL learning and limits text as much as possible, unlike other tutorials. Images > Text.
The tutorials will cover pixel art from start to finish, by studying video-game graphics from the past 30 years; with topics ranging from creating initial line art, to fully animating sprites. These tutorials will not focus on my own personal methods; instead they will combining examples from the past with modern application!

It's a fun tiny book that thoroughly goes through the main aspects of pixel art. There is nothing particularly unique that can't be learned elsewhere, but in the era when most of tutorials are made as video clips on youtube it's nice to have an alternative.
Don't expect to be enlightened, but it's definitely worth its price and worth checking out if you're a starting in pixel art.

cũng tạm, xem youtube nhiều là biết hết à :)))
Update review:
- cuốn này được nhận xét là tiny book, vì tuy 200 trang nhưng toàn ảnh là chính, phân tích ít.
- Guest article chiếm rất nhiều.
- ngay đoạn phân tích tool ban đầu đã không ổn rồi. Sách có nói công cụ chỉ là công cụ chứ không quyết định chất lượng (uk đúng), rồi công cụ nào cũng như nhau, kể cả paint thì ehh. Giờ cầm con dao gọt hoa quả đi chặt gỗ thì cũng được đấy, nhưng tất nhiên là không hiệu quả rồi. Cái nhìn rất tệ.
- các kỹ thuật trong sách đều có thể thấy trên youtube/trên mạng, với các phân tích không hề kém hơn, thậm chí còn rõ ràng và chi tiết hơn. Cơ bản mỗi chapter trong này chỉ tầm 1 vid youtube 10-20' thôi à.
- mình trông đợi ở 1 phần đặc biệt như anatomy cho pixel art, mà không có. Nhưng nghĩ lại chắc tác giả chưa đủ tầm viết cái này =)))
- sách thiên về practical chứ không có lý thuyết nào sâu.
- tầm mắt hơi thấp. Các ví dụ cũng nông quá, lại bỏ qua các ví dụ gần đây.
QUAN TRỌNG: điều quan trọng mình học được khi học trên schoolism là: trước khi nghe họa sĩ nào nói, hãy xem portfolio của họ, hãy xem họ đã vẽ được những gì. Mình hoàn toàn không ấn tượng với những gì tác giả vẽ ra, thành ra mình cũng không đánh giá cao lắm nội dung. Đọc thì lại càng thêm không đánh giá cao.
Kết luận: đọc cũng được, vì đọc nhanh thfi 2-4h thôi. Có thười gian thì xem youtube và ngồi vẽ tốt hơn. Tốt hơn nữa thì học kỹ thuật vẽ cơ bản và coi pixel art là style thôi (tất nhiên rồi).

This book has a lot of valuable information for beginners. I really appreciate the readability chapter and that was most of the reason I purchased the book. Readability in video games is very important to me. Some guidelines in other chapters were stated as fact when they felt more like opinion to me, but it is stated several times that people should feel free to bend the "rules." When it comes to aesthetics and art, it's all opinion, so I appreciated the more technical information over information that was based on "this looks better" when I personally didn't think it looked better. Maybe I have bad taste or maybe I enjoy a different aesthetic in pixel art, whatever it is, I choose to take those directions with a grain of salt. Either way, there's plenty of value in this book for someone starting out with pixel art.

Very good, much like Jennifer Dawe's book on pixel art, this book comes with plenty of examples and is perhaps a bit more comprehensive in certain aspects like how anti-aliasing is done and what the pros and cons of certain decisions like dithering and so on. Though it's not as reader-friendly in the exercise department, which puts the onus on you to come up with how to practice what you have learned to digest the information.
Though they overlap in some aspects, I'd recommend reading Dawe's book first and then picking this one up both for repetition and more detail. :)

Ima jako puno korisnih informacija vezanih uz razvoj pixel igara. Preporučam ako vas zanimaju takve igre, ako želite naučit nešto o korištenju boja, ograničenjima koja su 80ih i 90ih imali developeri ili želite vidit čega sve ima u pixel svijetu.
Knjiga ima različia izdanja i stalno se dodaju nove stvari. Ako poželite čitat probajte pronać najnovije izadnje jer bi trebalo imat najviše informacija.

I don't really get the need to use a dated system that appeals only to the nostalgic. But the guide is well done and pretty clear.

Cool for a starter i guess. A little to simplified and some pixel art areas are left behind. It's easy and lovely read though.

A fine resource. Personally, I would have preferred more exercises - the book encourages self-study but offers no practicum. Otherwise contains a lot of helpful advice.
