As someone who comes from a family born in a different country, 'homeland' and 'mother' have very different meanings- Parallel Mothers shows the hypocritical manifestation of the empty patriotism of the elits through family values. The film cleverly reveals today's echoes of fascism and Franco's legacy through the intertwined lives of two mothers from different social strata. This is much more than a story about motherhood; more like an exploration of what 'homeland' really means.
