such a great book! also "wanting" by @lukeburgis which explains memetic desire, as well as "simulacra and simulation" by baudrillard - or a summary of it is fine, lays out how our perception of reality is formed (it's memes!)

‘Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life’ by Luke Burgis. This book changed the way I view every decision I make, action I take, and how the world and its people operate.

Excellent book. @lukeburgis is a great writer and a good dude too.

Really enjoyed this book by @lukeburgis. "When a person’s identity becomes completely tied to a mimetic model, they can never truly escape that model because doing so would mean destroying their own reason for being."

One way to think about it is the old adage: "You are the sum of your five best friends" Choose carefully, and don't spend time with people whose lives/desires don't line up with your intrinsic desires. There's a lot more to it, but that's the gist. Read the book, it's great:
