Vasari's Lives of the Artists I'm quite serious. In the Renaissance, before art as craft got separated from art as ideas, artists were the ultimate craftsmen.

Florentine Renaissance artists are more famous today than their Venetian contemporaries in large part because Vasari, a Florentine, wrote about them while some were still alive. But that says a lot about how readable and full of interest is Vasari's book "Lives of the Artists."
