Born in Antwerp, Belgium, to Elkan Stein and Chana Goldman, Ashkenazi Jews from Belgium. Fled to the United States after the German invasion in 1940. Graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1949 and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1955. Taught at MIT and the University of Chicago before becoming a full professor at Princeton in 1963.
