Another @BrandSanderson profile, this one in Esquire. It casually mentions that Brandon wrote 12 novels before one sold, which I think is something worth pointing out: Most "first novels" aren't, and persistence is important to getting to that first book.
Ted Chiang is one of the smartest humans on the planet (also, he would be mildly uncomfortable with that statement, regardless of it being true) and this piece, and its metaphor, are both very good.
Good stuff from @tedleo, 20 years on. His entire discography is pretty damn spiffy, if we're being honest.
