Born in Oklahoma and raised in Long Island, New York. Attended Manhasset Secondary School, where she was a member of the Leaders Club and selected as "most likely to succeed" in the high school class of 1963. Graduated from Brown University in 1967 and initially pursued a career as an actress. Received an inheritance at the age of 23 and embarked on a road trip across the United States and Mexico. Met Joe Dominguez, a former Wall Street financial analyst, and they became lifelong friends.
