Also a great thread from @mlipsitch on the recent brouhaha over the Boston experiment. This is the key point. Clearly, self-regulation isn't enough. There needs to be clear regulations, as global as possible, with smart, independent, informed oversight.

So here's my take on the BU experiments. I know you can't say this on Twitter, but it is my current state of understanding, possibly imperfect, subject to revision with better understanding, and trying to make sense rather than condemn opponents.

Gift link to the must-read essay by the excellent @jesse_bloom on virology and biosafety. He's right. Much good can come from powerful techniques virology has developed, but that also greatly increases the risks. Independent, smart oversight is crucial.

This is a great piece by Craig on pandemic preparedness, especially in the context of the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

A great article about a crucial topic. Many people struggling with Long Covid are running out of short-term disability and savings, but the disability/insurance bureaucracy keeps putting up obstacles — and many are are already too ill to navigate that maze. Terrible situation.

And here's the link. At a minimum, people should read all the supplements. See below the characteristics of 99% unvaccinated older cohort that was studied (still can't make sense of why the negative controls shift with each study? Will ask about that).

Many will know of Ehrenreich's very succesful book, "Nickel and Dimed", but I was also very fond "Bright-sided: How Positive Thinking is Undermined America, her excellent book excoriating the shallow "just think-positive!" industrial-complex. Her voice will be missed.

An excellent recent piece in the Atlantic on "Long Influenza" and Epstein-Barr Virus (cannot wait for that vaccine) complications—including Long EBV and a variety of other chronic conditions. A National Institute for Post-Viral Conditions is warranted.

Excellent @aaronecarroll essay on why we should advocate for vaccination for kids, but also good analysis of why the rates have been so abysmal. Risks are low isn't an argument against lowering them even further by such an effective tool. #giftlink

A great summary from an expert: an adeno-associated virus (AAV2) plus adenovirus/herpesvirus *and* genetic susceptibility interacting. One only wishes this much effort went into solving more medical mysteries. Such mysteries aren't that rare.

My recreational reading atm: it's great for this too. Fraud is *always* about structure. (In the Before Times, my "recreational" reading had a lot of pandemic and outbreak lit, now my "recreational" reading is books on sociology of interesting stuff.😭)
